Fitting a trip computer...

Hi all,

What are the ins and outs of fitting a trip computer to my Mk2 GLX (Yr 2000). Is this a straight forward upgrade over the standard interface which the car came with, or do I have to do a considerable amount of re-wiring and fiddling about?

google mirez and all you need is there on the how to
I had to add wires to my 2000 model, not a hard job to do and a great upgrade.

Make sure you get the correct trip computer, I think you will need rel 5 version.
what did you have to do? The mirez article looks quite complex!

its not, its piece of piss, all you ned to remember is "one wire at a time" :L
It looks hard but it's not :L

Mine was made easier because of a couple of things. Namely, I took the VSS feed from the back of the radio which meant I only had to find one wire in the engine bay connector. And this was made even easier, because it was right at the top and had '28' (for pin 28) embossed in the connector right next to it! One snip, a quick join with a chockblock (not worth the risk of soldering this close to the main feed IMO) and the jobs a goodun :L

I haven't managed to get my range function working yet, probably because my car is a very late Mk2 and my trip comp is a rel 4. I got a twin track sender from a 98 Ghia X V6 to try and see if that works but I'm in no major rush.

Hi, Which year cars would have that software version? Ie, would a trip from a 1999 car do, or would it have to be from a Yr2000 one?

Hi,

Short update. All is going well with the installation of this project. Finally found a TC with rel 5 on it.

Last question: Where is the fitting location for the external tempreture sensor behind the front bumper. Easy to get to or is a a bank holiday job?
Pretty easy, jack the front of the car up and undo the bolts that hold the black radiator undershield on, remove the shield and look up around the area where the fogs are (if fitted) and you will see the notch where the sensor fits :)
Thanks, can you be a bit more specific? I'm looking in the area of the ns front fog and where the horn is, but nothing is leaping out at me!
Sorry, from memory it's a bit further up than the actual foglight but in that general area. The best I can describe it is, is as a slot cut in the frame about the length of the sender. One end of the slot is a bit wider than the other. There are some threads on this site with photos of the location but unfortunately I don't remember which ones exactly :(
Job done, great thanks! I still have one small problem. The range function won't work until the fuel tank is roughly half empty? I'm using the correct version of the trip for my car year (W). Ideas..?
Have you actually run the car with a full tank yet with the trip computer installed? I think they have some kind of safety buffer thing that doesn't deactivate until they sense a full tank, or something like that I believe :)
