Ford Probe Distributor Advice

I’m considering buying a Ford Probe as a project car. The two common issues are auto transmission failure and distributor failure. Is/was there an aftermarket fix, better product or conversion to alleviate breakdowns due to the distributor?

I just googled Ford Probe distributor problem,
it seems the ignition coil is inside the distributor and can fail, possibly due to heat build up.
solutions include replacing the coil, using an external coil or fitting a distributor-less ignition.
Obviously prices and complexity varies, maybe only solve the problem if it occurs?
