I just googled Ford Probe distributor problem,
it seems the ignition coil is inside the distributor and can fail, possibly due to heat build up.
solutions include replacing the coil, using an external coil or fitting a distributor-less ignition.
Obviously prices and complexity varies, maybe only solve the problem if it occurs?
