Fuel Gauge

2001 Mondeo Tddi 280,000 mls

For the past month the Fuel gauge has been cutting out and coming back on itself. Just today the gauge was dead, I had £15 of fuel in the tank before it died, put a further £10 in and after two engine starts and a 10 second wait stationary at the pump the needle moved to half way. Is this the sender unit playing up or something else.

yep id be inclined to suspect the sender unit if you look over the tank under the rear seat and find the wire going to the sender unit then get a test lamp .ie ..a simple bulb holder with bulb connected to two wires and bridge the wire going to the sender ot earth you shuld be able to get the guage to operate across the spectrum f to e..if not the unit is probably us.
