Dont sound normal to me, have you checked oil level? what does it smell like? is it over/under level?
Could be something like a slight oil leak and it's burning off? 45 miles isn't a short trip, should be enough to get oil to start smoking!
monitor oil useage and report back...
When you remove the dipstick or oil filler cap is there any pressure? Excess pressure might point to worn bores, Or a blocked breather system.

You dont mention what car you have & what mileage. When was the last oilchange?
Hi sorry its a 2003 2.0 graphite

thare was no pressure under cap or dip stick.

cheers
hi i dipped the oil this morning after it had been stopped all night. the level is above the max line. done on level ground. oil seemed a bit thin too.

cheers

This intrests me to ive just noticed last weekend when i take the filler cap of or the dip stick out when the car is running i get fumes to but i read a post the other day on here and someone said it was normal?? now reading this it seems not the case??? confused
Fumes from the oil filler when the engine is running is normal. Fumes escaping from the oil filler cap when the cap is still fitted is not normal. Same for the dipstick.

You say your oil level is too high, well I think you
have found the answer to your problem. Excess oil is over pressurising the engine. Drain some off and see how it goes.

Not sure what spec oil it is for the 2.0L car but the 2.2L use 5w30, that is thin.
