hey guys, just realised whatthe whineing was coming from today,

its the gear box, when i put my clutch down in 1st 2nd and a little bit in 3rd it whines, when i knock it in to neutral it doesnt,

it does it when its in gear too but its quiter and much harder to hear due to the engine,

what could this be? do i need more gear box oil?

the gear box is solid, never grinds, goes into gears fine, and never had any troubles tbh,

any one got any ideas what it could be?
regards

Sounds like the 1st motion shaft/input bearing is on it's way out.

The only remedu will be another box or recondition that one as the bearing will eventually fail and then you will lose all drive.

A reconditioned box from a decent place will set you back around the £400 plus fitting mark. I wouldn't go for a cheap option as there are some cowboys out there that will rip you off left right and centre. It's not worth trying to recon the box yourself unless you have acess to a press etc.

Avinitlarge, your's is a special car and as such I think you are bloody sensible in keeping spare's for it.

reconditioned box seems the best option just depends weather you want to fork out that much money really, you could but another car for that also.

right sod it, ill drive it till it falls apart, and then ill buy a 2nd hand gear box - but it wont be reconditinoed, probably cost me about 50 quid,

ill try n find a low mileage one and ones thats from a 1.6 mondeo as the gear ratios will be much better for acceleration than my current 2.0, plus i barely go on the motor way,

bookwise is this a bad plan?

It sounds ok to me. The problem with buying a second hand box is that you don't know the condition of the box a lot of the time. I have known people who have tried this and ended up with a worse box than before.

The idea of the 1.6 box is a good one as we had a 1.6 diesel escort van running an xr3i gearbox. Was shit hot off the line but the top end on it was 85ish. Scared a few people at the lights though.

right well my car has done 155,000 miles so im guessing its gonna go within the next 10 - 20,000....

and seen as tho 1.6's are pretty rare ill have to start looking now for a low milage one,

i got a 1.6 on my drive that its mint, engine never done over 70 and for the 8 years my mum drove it she drove it to work (10 mins away) and back at 30 mph! lol sadly im gonna sell it but the gear box is mint!

good thing about the 1.6 box is that its the same, and has the same strength!

85 top speed thats bloody fast for an escort van, iv never had one faster than that. (around 23-27 company vans)

Depends where you are driving though Darren. Used to have to use the M5 in the Midlands for one or two junctions but was mainly used around town where the gearing was perfect.

We used to get over a ton out of her until we played with the box.

you would be better off splitting the 1.6 you would get more money for it in bits trust me mine wasnt worth £300 as a whole but in parts ive got over £1400 still more bits to sell yet.
