Took car to Ford for a service today, (its the first one) and they tell me it needs new front tires.

Now I know I dont drive slow, and I did expect the tires to wear quicker than I am used too, but is 12k normal? I do a fair bit on the motorway, mainly at 80mph, and even though I enjoy my driving on country roads The short lifespan surprised me.

So firstly do i have a problem?

Secondly, if not, what Tires would you recommend? The Sport Conti 2s are great, fantastic wet braking and handling, but I would like something that can last longer, I do drive 35k a year.

And Finally, Ford are asking £175 per tyre, and telling me that the tires are special with reinforced sidewalls. Is that true?

What do i need to search for? (I find mytyres.co.uk seems ok.)

You will get lots of answers to this question.
Can i ask what make of tyre you are using,tyres
of different brands are constructed differnetly
and the compound which make the tyre can be of
varying types.
The tyre side wall does need to be of an index
rating of 91 or higher,this "LOAD INDEX" is what
governs the tyre's max load carrying capacity.
As a tyre to recommend for your car with all
that torque,i would go for TOYO PROXES.

the TDCi is a big heavy car, with a lot of its weight over the front wheels, plus a lot of torque, add in soft tyres and thats not bad.

I was getting through fronts in 8k on my Racing Puma, but that was a company car, so I wasn't paying

i only get about 5k on the toyo's on front. rears last about double that

ok thanks folks.

Was on the factory fitted Contis.

Will prob go for the same again, because unless the Toyos are cheaper, Longevity is fairly Important, as I mentioned.

As long as there is no problem, I will just have to live with the Lifespan.

Oh well, the car makes up for it :woot:
