ghia x steering wheel

hello all
my dad has a 2002 mk3 ghia x it has the cruise control buttons on the steering wheel
can anyone tell me if the buttons should light up when he has his lights on
The buttons all work but they just dont light up at night with the rest of the dials etc
should they ??
