Yesterday at our local Tesco's Autoglass were doing free chip repairs. So off i went with the Focus to have one repaired, and then went back a short time later to have two of them done on the Mondeo. While i was there i asked the bloke if there were any trade secrets on how to remove scratches from glass, as i have a scratch on the drivers door window about 3 inches long. He said there was this stuff called "Jewelers Rouge(sp?)" which is like a very fine rubbing compound. Apparently its very hard work but should polish the scratch right out. He didnt know where would sell it and ive never heard of it before, so i was wondering if anybody on here had any ideas?

I was worried about mine with the MOT too, which in the Mondeo is due on the 12th of next month. I had 2 chips, one in my line of view and one in the middle bottom part of the screen. The Autoglass bloke said that neither of them were an MOT failiure as the chip had to be more than 10mm in diameter to fail. All the MOT place would do is recommend you have it repaired, as theres a good chance of it spreading. As for finding out where and when ive no idea. Maybe you could ring Autoglass or RAC windscreens and see if they can tell you.

They won't charge your excess if they can repair. They have a deal with the insurance companies, so either they repair it and charge you nothing, or they replace and charge you your excess.

Thats right, the Autoglass fella told me that the insurers either pay for the repair, or risk it spreading to a big crack and have to pay up for a new windscreen. Chip repair is £68 according to the same bloke, but a new heated screen is nearly £400!

i got 3rd party fire and theft with windscreen cover £50 excess and only £100 excess if the car is stolen and i got 3rd party cover to drive any other car pretty good really, i always check the extra's and wont make the mistake of not having windscreen cover again not after having to buy a new screen for my mk2.

il lgo fully comp but only when ican protect my ncb no point at the moment 1 being a car under £5000 and why pay more if i cant protect it.

I had to have my windscreen replaced because of the council doing roadworks last summer over at Redcar, apparently it was "too hot" and the stones they put down on the road "didn't stick".

I got a massive crack right down the window and had it replaced, but it got replaced with some generic heated screen that I've never been happy with. The heating still works, but it's just not as good as the Ford one, RAC Windscreens won't do anything because it works and that's that.

As for it being too hot for the stones to stick to the road, that just confused the hell out of me, but I got my excess back after I complained to the council, who passed it to their sub contractor... who passed it to their sub contractor! Crazy!

Ah, the road of road maintenance, everything is sub contracted and subcontracted again and again, stupid really, just means the tax payer pays £100 for a £20 job!

I live in redcar normally and know what you mean about the roads after repairs! I had to respray the bonnet on the punto i had a few years ago due to loose chippings after resurfacing!
