Handbrake sticking on and MOT tomorrow!

Hello all,

After rebuilding the top end of my V6 I've booked an MOT ASAP but I could do with unbinding my handbrake.... any tips that don't involve ordering parts online? Thing is, the MOT's tomorrow afternoon.

When I put the handbrake on, then release it the car stays put as the rear brakes are still applied. I don't know if it's the cables or the callipers. Might there be a way to remedy it enough to pass an MOT???

Thanks in advance!

best thing to do simon, is take off the rear wheel, see your caliper, and u should see the arms on the caliper itself that holds the handbrake cable on, now have a friend apply the hand brake and release it, that arm should move, if it doesnt, then spray the arm good where it goes into its joint, (be careful not to get it on the pads/discs)

and hit it with a hammer to knock it back off or vise versa, and work the hand brake up and down to let the oil do its job, hopefully it will free it up and not give you trouble at the mot place tommorow and it will be a free fix,

good luck with it, hope you sort it :)
This is gonna sound gay but here goes...

Fred - what would I do without you?! I will check this out in the morning, thanks ever so much.

Do you know if it's both wheels or just one side mate? Try Fred's suggestion for sure.

What I've also noticed is that the rubber grommet on the caliper where the cable enters disintegrates badly allowing all sorts of crap inside the cable. My offside got some water in it and would freeze up regularly overnight in the winter, meaning the spring lever on the caliper couldn't free the handbrake. The ultimate solution is a new cable. Failing that, to get some grease inside it. However since you're pushed for time it might be worth just spraying a load of WD40 down the cable end too. Good luck :L
Cheers, I've just had a look with it (oh and fixed my light clusters 100% and found my throttle clip lol) and sadly it's not the cable, but the caliper.

I suspect nearside is the main offender, it gets pretty stuck when the handbrake has been applied. Pulling the cable out with mole grips doesn't release the caliper so it must be the caliper itself. Applying the foot-brake doesn't seem to make it stick so I think it's that lever thing. I'll need a new caliper I think but I intend to look inside this thing and see if it's dirty or something.

Using needle nosed mole grips to persuade this to the "resting position" makes the disc/hub free to spin, so it must be this causing my woes.

You need two new rear brake cables.They are prone to getting water inside and rusting up..it's a common fault on these cars..
Thanks Terry, it sure looks that way on second thoughts.

The MOT man was patient enough and they did their best for me but she miserably failed in the end.

Emissions test was interesting, I'll not go there, let's just say the lights went green in the nick of time.

They failed it on the binding brake and on my scrubbed inners of front tyres and on both wishbones and one wishbone balljoint.

So I need:

* 2 front tyres
* 2 wishbones
* 2 hand brake cables

I've been to my usual motor shop and paid £70 for the wishbones and cables and will just have to buy some cheap tyres to get me through. I can always change to nicer ones later.

I am not having a good day but I'm one step closer to the car being ready and good.

On the plus side the car sounded amazing being revved in the garage and after the big pause at ~3500rpm goes like stink! Maybe I'll finally get the handling I want when the wishbones are done.

Should be fun, will be easy compared to head gaskets :}

good luck with it simon, hopefully its the cables and not the calipers, and it goes smoothly for you :L
Just to wrap this up, the cables largely fixed the binding brakes. It was more one side than the other (the bad side cable was damaged and rusty).

The wheels were free enough for the MOT man yesterday but I'm still sensing a little resistance that will be coming from the calipers. I'll get them changed over summer all being well, they look like they've lived on the ocean floor.

The MOT re-test was straightforward so I'm all tested and taxed again, phew!

I doubt you have any issue with the calipers Re handbrake.It is a combination of the cables plus the fact later cars and genuine Ford cable kits..add an extra return spring that slides over the levar at the caliper..these come with two Ford cables and 2 added springs..late cars had them,others did not..get the right stuff (cable kit with springs) and you will be set..
Interesting, so I might be able to completely un-bind them by sourcing a genuine Ford cable kit or just the extra spring?

The collective knowledge on this forum is superb! This problem has been driving me nuts for ages. I have exactly the same problem, perished rubber and calipers sticking. The guy I purchased my car from fitted new cables but not the spring, he must have got a cheap cable kit.

Not even garages I went to could tell me this. Does anyone know the FINIS code for these cables with a spring?
