Sounds like it could just be a flat battery. When the battery dies it often causes loads of electrics to go weird.
Ignition Issue
1997 MK2 GLX 170kms 2.0litre
When I try to kick over the car the dash flickers the engine clicks and the windscreen wipers go crazy.
New leads, new plugs, new coil pack..
Cause of it ? The car is stored underground and not driven often (once a fortnight)
