Its Gone

Well after 8 months with my 2.2 TDCI Titanium X is gone, I got fed up with the poor fuel consumption (30 - 32 mph) the constant DPF Regenerations that Ford said there was nothing wrong with, and trying to find a space wide enough to park in so we could get the baby seat in and out the back.

I've gone back to BMW and bought a 320d, looking forward to 45 mpg again and the joys of a car that drives the correct wheels

Thanks for all the help over the last 8 months.

Sorry to hear that. I too find the Mk4 just too big, and i've heard about the PSA 2.2 engine being too juicy.

Problem is, the old Duratorq was so economical in comparison (my Transit does 37mpg!) it makes the new one look silly! Hope you enjoy the BMW..
30-32 is way too low. I get 40ish on a long run and 36-37 with lots of stop start driving. And I don't hang about
Hi, I agree, something wrong with that kinda consumption. Yep its a big, it comes that way, should be of no suprise really as all the road tests, and measurements kinda indicate that. That's why the car is good value for money :)

So do I, and I love the size of the car, and the performance.

Still, we all have different needs, if we didn't we'd all be driving the same square boxes! Personally I can never understand why anyone would buy a BMW. That badge accounts for half the price, and the average BMW driver is a total centre-lane plonker :)

No offense, I hope! Glad you've found something you like.

The constant DPF regens could account for the low mpg. I do better than that with a petrol 2.3 auto!
That's shocking mpg - I wouldn't have been happy either. I have never had less than 40mpg and on a good run on A roads can get mid 40's. Yes the car is big (which for me is the point!) but I can also see why some may find it too big!.

I have a '08 Fiesta on loan today - and was amazed to find that it has many of the charaterisics of a large car and is actually very good driving up and down the motorway. And in town it is incredibly nimble. Given, like many of us, there is often only one person in the car I wonder why more of us aren't driving these instead.

Wouldn't be so good for my annual family drive to Eurpoe though. And the price of the Fiesta is another matter - expensive I thought.
yeah Ive got the 2.2 tdci also, I dont do much apart from town driving but I am too only seeing 31.3 MPG. Its never been much of an issue for me as I'm achieving what i did in a 1.6 astra petrol with much better performance. Having read other peoples claims of getting 40MPG plus does make me wonder where I'm going wrong though, I once reset the trip and drove like a pensioner for a tank and only achieved 35MPG. I dont think it will be long before I get a remap done to see if I can improve this, not going to wait uch longer to see if Bluefin finally come up with a way to get round my ECU.

I have found short journeys really hammer the mpg.

I filled up the other day and reset the clock - drove 25 miles down the motorway, 3 miles through slow urban traffic, did another 42 miles down the motorway and then 15 miles down A roads and the next day did similar and had 46mpg showing .

My missus then took it out locally on a couple of short runs and the mpg had plummented towards 41mpg!

Re the bluefin - I found it made about a 10% improvment to economy. I am also getting better economy now then when the engine had less miles on (I have 30k on the clock now).
yeah I know that the bluefin unit would be the making of the engine but the build date of my car was feb 09... After the new software update on the 2.2 and bluefin still havent found a way to get the unit to work.

Mine is around the same date and although no bluefin available for the reason you say I did take mine to superchips to let them do the re-map. Great result and mpg is quite a bit better, have to say it is rare for me to see under 40mpg on most runs, hope this helps.

yeah thats something ill definately look into, ideally would like to have the handset so I could reset it when it went in to the dealers, £500 these days for the remaps arent they?

You know whta - I have yet to re-set mine before sending into the dealers - I have meant to and fogotten - and its not been a problem. To that extent I wouldn't personally be that fussed about using the superchip istead of the bluefin unit if I were to go through it all again.
Hi, in that case you could save around £250 over the bluefin...
Chris
cheers mondie and chris, call me cynical but if I were the manager of a dealership and found out about a remap during routine servicing its not something I would bring up as long as the car is going there for its service and running trouble free. That would only get mentioned if something came in to be done under warranty. That is if these jobs are undertaken at no profit to the dealer. As for the £250 saving on the bluefin... Any chance you could enlighten me Chris?
Hi, if a blue ine costs £500, "500 these days for the remaps arent they", then minus what my remap cost, £250, saving £250...
Chris
Yeah I understand Chris I was rather hoping you were going to tell me who did your remap? :p
cheers Chris! I'll look into it, not sure if they do the latest 2.2 though they only have the 155hp version listed which went into the mk3.
Quick update 1st tank in the BMW 320d was 42.8 MPG and first time I had seen over 500 miles out a tank of diesel in ages,

Not bad for mostly town driving and me enjoying the performance when circumstances allow.
