Key Fob Not Working

9224 Views 22 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  kop
Had my 08 Mondeo since December 2008 with no problems.

I have keyless entry and button start. Today I got out of the car and it wouldnt lock. So I pressed the lock button and nothing.

Also car would also not re-start, it came up with key not detected. Went in doors and got spare key. Everything worked fine with this.

My query is:
1. Will Ford Charge me a fortune to replace the battery. Its due a service next week.
2. If I wasnt at home and didnt have the spare key. Would I not be able to actually start the car!!! This is alarming!!

Anyone who can help I would be appreicated.

Kop,
1. Ford will charge about £26 to change the battery, you can diy for the cost of the battery £2 or so. it is easy enough to come apart.

2. yes, if you're away from home you'd be buggered.

3. Buy a double pack of batteries and keep the spare one in the car.
Shouldnt the key fob still work as a passive key inside the car and allow you to press the start button, as it doesnt need the battery for that?

So you shouldnt be stuck.

But DIY battery change is a must.
Mine didnt!!!

Said it couldnt locate key on dassh

Really, well thats a wazz isnt it. Just had to try it, and your right. As tellmah suggests, I've now put a spare battery in the car.

Seems daft to have a key to get in the car if the fob battery goes flat, only to find you cant start the car anyway.

I wonder if the car will start on the key if the door is opened with the key? May try that tomorrow.

At this point the manual suggests you pull the blanking plate off the steering column and insert the keyfob into the slot designed for it.

It should then detect the key.

I had to ty it and indeed it does.

I unlocked the car with the key.

I removed the battery from the fob and after removing the blanking plate from the steering column ( was expecting to see a key hole behind this ah ah) inserted the fob as the manual described. The transponder in the fob was detected fine and I could start the car.

The only probelm I can see, is that when you unlock the car wih a key, it doesnt seem to turn off the alarm as I can hear the door warning chime which I seem to remember sounded the last time I tested opening the door with a key and the alarm went off.

In my experiment above, I unlocked the car with a key, then hit the unlock on the spare remote located well away from the car, which turned the chime off and the alarm didnt sound.

Not investigated this any further yet as work calls.

If after you opened the door and the alarm was going off, once you inserted the keyfob and hit the start button, the alarm should silence.

I sort of guessed this could be the case, and was going to try it well away from any populous in case I didnt get the cover off and start the car in time before the alarm went. Ok I could have tried it on the drive. I guess you've been there :)

I dont have to do that now.. Thanks
Ok, ive now been able to replace the battery in my fob. It now unlocks and locks the doors via remote control fob. What it doesnt do is allow the car to be unlocked using keyless entry (small button on door) or allows the car to start when sitting in car like normal. It just says, key not detected however the remote locks the doors when I get out using the actal fob.
I dont have keyless entry, but I wonder if you have the fob that has now got the new battery outside the car, and lock the car with the other key fob. Now unlock the car with the fob with the new battery, with this now allow you to start the car and also operate the keyless entry.
No this wont work. Ive spoken to Ford and they have said because the power from the fob has been flat for a few days the key will have lost its programming for keyless entry.

Its going in for a service on weds so Ive told them to re-programme it. I will also be telling weds that I wont be paying for it!
Oh, so providing you change the battery quickly, it retains the keyless entry and allows you to start the car. Magic.

I wonder if our keyless start has the same issue if you dont replace the battery as soon as you are warned.

I am not going to try this to prove it.

I dont have keyless entry but I do seem to have a keyless entry receiver/antennae module under the rear seats of my car which I suspect is the key in the boot detector. Doesnt make any difference if it connected or not, the car still starts and remotes still operate.

Does anyone else have this. Pull down the rear nearside passenger seat, lift up the boot carpet behind the seat and in a recess in the expanded foam almost in the middle between the rear seats there is the antennae. You will see a recess for the towing eye, or there is in mine.

I would assume that anyone with keyless start (not keyless entry) would have this problem. Coz my key wont start that car with me sitting inside as well as opening the doors keyless.

Very annoying.
Indeed, we will.

You probably wont be able to answer this if you didnt have a low battery warning, how long was the battery in need of replacing.
Ive had the car since early december 2008. It was 6months old b4 that...so I would say the batter has lasted 2 years!! I got no warnings about a low battery on my dash!

I got in the car at work. Arrived home. When I got out I tried to lock it and the fob didnt work. Got spare Fob and everything was ok....So no I cant answer your question.

I brought a Duracell Battery to replace the flat one. The fob went dead thursday eve and I put the new battery in today around 1.30pm

Kop,

to be on the safe side, i would replace the spare battery as well, my spare went within a week of my normal fob, weird seeing as it hasn't been used, but it will save you having the same problem.
Thought you must not have got a warning.

So deffinitely prudent to keep a spare close by. I can see a bit of thought has gone into this by Ford, and only a bit too.

Forwarned is good.

Phil
I defo didnt have a warning. To be honest...Im getting rid of the car in 5 months....So not too botheredd about the 2nd remote. I know what you mean though.
