knocking from the front suspension

Hey guys i got my car up on the ramps yesterday after hearing what sounded like knocking from the front suspension, i immediately suspected the front drop links but after having a good look around and a push and pull here and there the only thing i could find was the drive shafts could move a mil or 2 in and out. is this likely to be the ball joints worn ?. cheers stu
