Im not sure if the occasional tapping from the top of my engine (near the timing chain end) is either a tappet noise or little end.. The car is a 1998 ST24 with 76K on the clock. (history to back all this up) but th eoil was below the minimum when i collected it.. (think its a small/minor crank pulley seal leak)

it only really happens under load and around the 2500-3000k rpm range and then peters of a little but is stil there...

Its noticable to those who know what they are listening too etc (but my wife doesnt really notice it! lol)

im off to a rolling road on saturday with a group of people from another forum i use (VXON) and the car is planned to go on the rollers. the chap there primarily specialises in cosworths and kows his fords inside out so if he feels that its not safe to run in case of breaking it then he wont let it (good good!)

My main question is assuming the worst case (little end) whats the worst that can happen?? is it dangerous to drive with this if it gets worse etc? or will it just be a case of one day the engine will just die etc.. jus await the inevitable etc?

IMO, if i am to remove the engine to get the engine pulled apart then i might aswell just swap it over for another lowish mileage engine.. (less costs i woud assume in the long run)

And if so, how hard is it to swap the engine in a V6 mondeo?? I have heard rumours about the car having to be on a lift to go up and down countless times etc (i.e. workshop only job) or is it possible for a "home mechanic" to complete with a crane and a very comprehensive tool kit??? (ive done lots of various engine swaps/removals/fiting before so the idea of it isnt too daunting) Just dont want to bite of more than i can chew with regards to lack of workshop "eqiupment"...

thanks muchly in advance...

Lee

p.s. seeing as i work with american car parts.. i might just get me a 3.0l engine over from the states! ;)

aside from the rattle, there doesnt seem to be any other problems that i can see... there is a small flatspot at around 4k but that could be something to do with the Chip/Induction kit/exhaust etc...

im not sure if i should reset the ecu with a superchip fitted or not?
