Hi guys, am asking this on behalf of a mate whose at loss to why he is losing coolant. he has a 1.8 diesel 97 escort (same as the the mondy lump i believe) and is losing water in a few days, there is no signs of puddles, drips or steam. he recently took the car to a garage who carried out a coolant system pressure check which passed ok, the guy said its not external so has got to be internal. I asked him about the oil and there is no signs of mayo effect? sorry for going on, any help/ideas appreciated! cheers ppl.

could it be such a small leak that it isnt noticed or is evaporating off a hot parrt of the engine , try some radweld as a temporary measure to see if that cures it , if it is not leaking externally and the oil is not contaminated then it must be a leak from one of the cylinders into the cooling system :L

Check the thmerostat housing at the front of the engine. When it leaks it drips on to the start motor and sometimes not on to the floor.

Like mine was doing, just changed it and fitted new seals. Fingers crossed.

Its the big pipe which goes from the front of the engine block to the rad.

rubber coolant pipes can become hard and brittle and water can sneak out of them ive had this on the wifes old astra TD took some finding too if you leave it long enough it will appear, usually when your far from home and in a rush

I have found with my car that on occasions, I can really smell the coolant when I leave the car, it is especially bad after motorway driving. Only thing is my water loss is not significant, in fact I have not topped up the water for a couple of months but still I can smell it? Any ideas?
