I have given up trying to find the problem on my Mk1 1.8 silvertop and was looking to replace it with a friends 2.0 ltr lump from a very early Mk2. Im not sure if its a blacktop yet...

He did mention a problem that when I swap the ecu over there might be a problem with the PATS.

Will the swap over work? And if there is a problem with the PATS then how do I get around it?

Am I on the right track or should I just stick it in a field and burn it?

Thanks :L

early mk2s have the silvertop, so that shouldnt be a problem. If you can get the key for the mk2, then all you have to do is swap the red transponder thing inside the key. Failing obtaining the key then i would just get an ECU from an early mk1. Should then just be a case of swapping the engine and ECU with out worrying about PATS and different wiring configurations etc
