Mk5 Spec Query

Hi, After nearly 8yrs with my trouble free Mk4 Titanium 2.0 petrol estate i am now looking to move upto a Mk5 Titanium estate, I have my eye on a 17 reg 2.0 diesel and have checked Etis for the car and raised a couple of queries as follows:

1) Etis states fitted Sync2, but surely 2017 tit model would be Sync3, Due to car being 70 miles away only seen photos, how can i tell difference between sync 2 and 3 purely from pics ?

2) Etis also states 16 inch wheels yet the dozens of 2016/17 titaniums appear to have 18 inch wheels, whats the norm for the model?

Finally I am not a diesel fan having last one being company Escort 25 yrs ago what can o expect from the transition aprt from hogher maintenance costs.

Thanks for any response

1) 2017 was the first of Sync 3 so it could be an end of line Sync 2 model registered in 2017, pics will have to show the screen turned on to notice the difference between 2 and 3. Sync 2 home button is at the bottom in the middle, Sync 3 home button is top left.
2) I'd be surprised if a Titanium had 16's, but UK specs are different to Ireland (where I am) our Titanium had 17's standard in 2017,now has 18's as standard. If you share a pic of the car someone on here (possibly even me) should be able to tell just by looking at them
3) Diesels have come a long way in that time, you'll have to go have a spin to see for yourself.

Hi Alan

I would agree with Noel. It must be on the change point if it has SYNC2 - check the build date on etis, not the reg date.

Sync2 has an easily changeable sd card in the centre arm rest box for map upgrades.

Sync 3 has to be updated by a dealer or yourself via the internet.

Sync 3 is much better in operation and what it offers than sync2

I can only guess you have those size wheels due to Ireland Spec.

I had a fully kitted 2015 2 litre petrol ecoboost but I think they were discontinued around the year you want to buy.

I loved the ecoboost and it has a normal torque converter type auto trans - no prob.

If you buy a Mk 5 diesel and it is auto, it will have the Getrag Powershift wet clutch trans 6DCT450 model.

Mk5s with standard headlights get moaned about a lot for being not very good lights

I don't do diesels so I can make no sensible or helpful comment there.

Best of luck

Update

As said, I don't know Ireland Specs but just a quick thought - 16" rims were standard uk spec for "Econetic" Spec models which were built for fuel efficiency etc, don't know full details. Make sure it is not an Econetic model, if you change its spec we have to tell insurance company in the uk

Also the Econetic Specs were/are not Homologated for towing

Regards the wheels, I commented a long time ago that the MK3 handbook quoted

worse fuel consumption for the 17" and 18" over the 16" wheels.

Larger diameters must make more difference than we think.

Thanks for the usefull comments and now reread Etis and it shows reg Mar 2017 but build date Mar 2016 plus looked at photos and for me it does not seem to sit right on the 16s, in view of it being a 150 mile round trip to view by appointment i am dropping this one,

Looked at over a dozen 2016 2lt tits and all had sync 3. so now continue the search which is difficult under the present circumstances but still happy with MK4 so can afford to be picky.

A registration date 12 months after it was built seems very unusual to me.Would Be interesting to know what Dealership first sold it and where they keep them parked up.

Wow, that is most unusual for a Mk5 to have been reg such a long time after build date.
Don't blame you, leave it be.
Please let us know how you go on, good luck with your search

The DVLA should give Vehicles a registration number nearest to it's Build date

To me that should mean that a Car built in March2016 should not have a number beyond 66 (sept) which would allow time for getting the car to the Dealer.

I was into classic cars and it was not abnornal to find some cars built over a year before it

was sold. Not the same today as a lot of cars are now built to order with limited excess stock

some older MGB GTs could be 2 years old when registered.

I found a 2002 Mondeo MK3 that was one of the early 2000 builds. Where had that been

for 2 years? Could have been a show car or a project car.

Like the early Landrover Freelanders, running around with a Maestro Van bodyshell.

Ha, that reminds me when I was at Jaguar Cars Ltd. I was in Germany doing dealer visits and I traveled 500 miles just to see an owner who was seriously unhappy with his brand new Jaguar XJ6. I met the owner and enquired where his brand new car was. He pointed to his car, hell, it was not even the current model.
The dealer had sold him an old shape model that was two years old having been stood in the dealers compound all that time.

I just think with modern rules on Trade descriptions and even more so with twice yearly change of registration numbers,

The DVLA should take some responsibility for misrepresenting the age of a Vehicle

Especially when they ask for proof of age and Claim it will be given a number appropriate for it's age.

For example my personal reg E ~ ### and i would not be allowed to put it on a Car built in 1986?

I also remember a Vauxhall dealer who was caught out registering old "New" cars in 1980 because he had to retro fit rear fog lamps and when checked some of the vehicles were rusty and had been sat in a compound for up to 18 months.

A"New" car should be new not newly registered.

Dealers are allowed to sell "pre registered" as new?

I did not expect such a interesting response, Cheers, but it is very frustating at the moment trying to buy a motor, some dealers putting disclaimers on spec listing stating spec for similar model, ring for info and then they read from same spec so thanks for Etis,

Send email asking if car still available, no response and listing then vanishes,

Dealers offer "click and collect" is this a joke?,

Dont know whether dealers open or closed or offering viewing and finally Auctions dealers only and not even allowing register to view sales listing.

The V5C is the date of registration nothing more.

I bought a Rover 800 that had been in army use in some capacity and not

registered with the DVLA for over 5 years.

Its the date of registration not build on ths V5C.

New as in unused? Think of anything you buy new in any shop, how long did that

item spend on the shelf before you bought it?

You could buy a car now and stick it in a barn and not register it with the DVLA then

take it out in 20 years and register it as new.

To get free tax on some vehicles you could provide proof the car was built much earlier

than the registered date. Some models in the 70's sold well and some sat in fields for

years.

Well, two-ish years anyway. Although a current model can run for years so in theory a 2014 Manufactured Mk5 Mondeo would meet the criteria and could be registered in a week's time as a 2021. And if a mid life refresh doesn't technically count as an all new model, then an unregistered Mk5 could still be registered as new up until 2 years after the Mk5.5 stops production.
