I have a 58 plate Mondeo 1.8 TDCI Diesel, it has covered just over 160,000 miles. I was driving today and it developed a loud heavy knocking noise from the left hand side of the engine so I pulled over & turned the engine off, now when I try to start I get the loud heavy knocking & it fails to start.

I have only tried to start twice and don't think I'll be trying again sound like its killing the engine.

I don't know a think about cars.

Just looking for advise on what this could be & cheapest cost to repair.

Thanks

Have you had the fuel pump timing belt replaced?
These need replacing with the Cambelt at 125k.

Sounds like it might have failed mashing the engine.
Few stories of small end bearings failing but they still start and run.

I have looked at the service history, Fuel pump, Timing belt & Cam belt is not listed as ever been replaced.

Would you think I would need a new engine ?

Yes, sure sounds like it! You've done well to get it to last 160k! In which case you can't blame the car for beig unreliable, it's poor maintenance that's caused it to fail.
New engine fitted by ford is around £6000.
In theory a MK1 Focus TDCI engine should fit but it will need quite a bit swapping over from the old engine. I.e. all the ancillaries, fuel pump bracket and fuel pump, injectors, inlet manifold, turbo etc etc.

It doesn't sound good!

Belt in oil (fuel pump drive belt) is constantly ignored because either garage doesn't know about it or customer declines it due to cost!

We charge £640 fitted so you can see why!

I paid £640 from a dealer for the fuel pump timing belt, Cambelt and the aux belt. Piece of mind that if it fails early I can go back to The dealer and tell them its them who say its supposed to last for 125k!

Engine is damaged.

Getting a used engine that's done about 69,000 all fitted with new belts £2000.00

Hopefully back on the road next week.

Tell him to replace the fuel pump timing belt with a chain. You can still get them from ford but they are an extra £100. But it's piece of mind that it should last the lifetime of the car and you will only have to replacement cambelt in the future so it should pay for itself.

That's very cheap. We have a galaxy in at the moment with a seized engine, cheapest good engine I have found is £1600! That's complete with injectors, turbo fuel pump etc however ready to bolt in apart from replacement cambelts of course.

It's a taxi which hasn't been serviced in 90,000 miles..

Expensive cost saving don't you think?

Actually if you consider the average service is about £200 and he's missed 8 services then he would have saved £1600 which pays for the engine!

Then again a £40 oil service every 12k at national autocentre would have stopped his engine seizing!

I'm OCD with my car, oil and oil filter changes every 6k and change the rest of the filters every 12k.

Still waiting for car to be finished.

The used engine has 62,837 miles & has a chin not a belt.

so no worry about the belt snapping again.
