I need to rattle some brains. I have a rumbling noise starts at 1500 rpm to 2000 rpm. Best way of describing is it sounds like exhaust blowing. Had exhaust checked no leaks found. Replaced airfilter (as was damaged in housing) no change replaced EGR (was faulty anyway) no change. It appears to get more audible when warm. I've ran injector cleaner and changed fuel filter too. I can't pinpoint the location.

I've had no loss in power or fuel economy. Noise isn't relative to gear and is still the same with clutch engaged and disengaged.

Tried running with Aircon on and off if it was potentially a pulley issue again no change.

Any help or if anyone had similar it would be a massive help

not 100% but i THINK it might be EGR related. my old 2.0 TDCi used to have a similar rumble, as does a couple of mates cars that also have the 2.0. it seems to be normal as mine was never an issue.

I did initially think that. The noise occured before I replaced the EGR valve (it was sticking) so there was a definite EGR fault. However the noise is still there. I think potentially it could be scary fixes now the car is high mileage it's done 134k. Where I'm swaying to now is High pressure fuel pump bearing, crankshaft bearings or injectors.

I've seen the fuel pump is a keyway driven so could potentially be worn which has potentially damaged the bearing. Obviously a fuel pump would be a quick fix but the cost of it is not something I wish to gamble with lol.

High mileage? Some numbers missing from your mileage? :)

Alan Howatt on youtube works for a Taxi firm and plenty of their cars have close to 300k miles on them.
Mines over 170k and passes the MOT without issues.

Ha ha I'm an ex Renault mechanic anything over 70k is high mileage :p yea I've seen him quite a bit he loves the mk4's his fleet however consists of the 2.0 tdci's and I have the 2.2tdci kind of regret not going for the 2.0, the 2.2 is a lot more thirsty for not much power gain lol

I miss the power of my MK3 2.2L Diesel. MK4 2L feels a lot slower compared to that.

I think about a 2.2L but I like the £30 tax or the 2L. Economy is worse than the MK3 2L though.

I'm not ready to let it go but unfortunately it's lived its life by the sea and it has rust cancer. It's been valued at just over £1k any repairs that are in excess of that she's gonna have to go.

Unfortunately it's looking likely it's gonna be a costly repair noise is getting worse. I'm convinced more it's crankshaft bearings now more than injectors or fuel pump due to the fact I have had no issues starting or idling and only at a certain rev range.

if its the noise im thinking of, my mk4 had the same noise from me buying it at 4.5 years old and around 60k miles on it until i sold it with over 100k on it (cant remember the exact mileage now, it did very little during the covid years) in parrt ex for the mk5. the sound im referring to sounded almost like a slight blow on the exhaust or loose plastic cover or similar. with the bonnet up especially.

Does it make the noise when stationary?

@frembrit yea it makes the noise stationary when you pick the revs up to 1500rpm also noise doesn't change when you engage and disengage clutch. I'm certain it's engine related. After 2000rpm the noise quietens down though maybe cause engine noise over powers it. I'll upload a video later

Does this noise sound related to engine speed - does it get faster as you increase revs or does it remain constant.
Is it more exagerated under load?
I'm leaning towards big end bearings / main bearings but it's one of those things that's very difficult to determine without hearing it and experiencing it personally.

So my video didn't clearly show the sound. I wanted to say big end but never clunks on start up and too precise. It's literally 1500rpm to 2000rpm no matter what gear even in neutral.

I have a new theory though potentially engine mounts. Like I said no clunking and the vibration sound resonates more inside the car than outside. Normally you'd see excessive engine movement but not. However I had a friend look whilst I was holding the revs and the tone changed when leaning on the block. It was still there but there was a definite change in pitch. Is it a viable possibility. I have been experiencing very very slight vibration in the pedals too but it's really nothing to right home about
