Mondeo questions

Hi,

I have just bought a Mk3 Ford Mondeo 2.0TDCI 5-Tronic Ghia X Estate on a 53 plate. I got it from a garage and by and large it seems a really nice car. I haven't owned a Mondeo in a few years, and never a Mk3, so I'm enjoying owning it for the most part. However, I have a few niggles that I wanted to run by people here in case they're normal before I take it back to the garage to ask them to fix the things that are wrong with it.

First of all, on the instrument cluster there are two digital displays, one showing the number of miles the car has done etc on the right, the other on the left showing whether cruise control is active, how many MPG I'm doing etc. The one on the right is backlit but the trip computer one isn't, so it's impossible to read in the dark. It would seem strange if this were by design, but I thought I would ask.

Second thing, today was the first time I took it out on my daily commute, and after I had done some motorway work the car almost smelt of gas, like when there is a gas leak in the street and you can smell it, but it didn't just happen once, I smelt it in different locations and when I got home again this evening. I have never owned an automatic before, so maybe this goes with the territory, sounds unlikely, but again, I thought it best to ask others with similar cars

Also, to anyone who owns a car with a similar engine/transmission set-up, is it normal to feel like there is no power when I put my foot down sometimes. For instance, this morning I put the 5-Tronic gearbox into semi-auto mode, and tried to put my foot down in 5th cruising at about 75, and there was just no drive at all, it just remained at 75 and I had to change back to automatic mode and get it to kick down to make further progress. Is this normal? Am I expecting this to be too much like a manual or is this something that isn't right? It's also a lot noisier than I expected, again, is this just the way the car is?

Hope I wasn't too unclear about any of this, if you have any questions drop me a reply and I will try to expand on what I am asking.

Many thanks

Paul

Should be lit too, could be a dodgy bulb or a loose connection. Would appear to be quite a job getting the cluster out - http://fordwiki.co.uk/index.php/Fitting_Replacement_Dials_-_Mk3
I drove it again this morning to work and I definitely think there is something not quite right with the auto. When i have been following a colleague in his automatic, when the car kicked down you could see a puff of smoke, fair enough, but my car seems to belch smoke most of the time, i'm leaving relatively thin clouds of it almost all the time on the motorway. It seems especially bad in 4th. I put my foot down to make some speed up, it kicks down from 5th to 4th and i get some extra go but when i back off a little, there is quite a bit of smoke and a sound almost like the engine is being revved a little without any input from me. The irony is while i have my foot right down, there isn't really any smoke. It only seems to be when i back off slightly and keep my foot about half way on the pedal that it a lot of smoke starts to come out.
Could be the Variable vaines on the turbo are stuck...
Yeah i'm beginning to think it's not the auto, but the turbo. I did some more digging today on this site and around the internet and it seems like one of the more likely candidates is a split in one of the pipes that handles the turbo or intercooler. Not terribly technically minded so forgive if that's not quite the right way to phrase it. What i hope to do is find a diagram of the engine bay and if possible, tape the split and see if that has any effect.

I rung the garage I bought it from and it's booked in on Wednesday for them to take a look. I will mention on my note to them the Vains you mention as something to consider.

If anyone else has anything thoughts on the turbo and what the problem could be, I'd appreciate it

Thanks

Paul
Where in kent do u live fella, i'm in maidstone dont mind popping round to help if u need it, i've had loads of probs with these engines so know them quite well...
I don't live too far, in Herne Bay. I work in Ashford though, so if you prefer week days, I'm closer at that point. I would appreciate the help as well. If you are happy with weekends, I'm around on Sunday if that's any good?
I got this fixed today. It was a split pipe relating to the EGR in the end, so the auto was not at fault in any way and it now drives really nicely.

The garage also replaced everything else I moaned about so I'm a happy customer :)

Thanks to all that replied :)
