Hello, I have a 1984 Mercury cougar and there is an open pipe going straight up coming from under the engine. It has been converted to have a carb and was wondering if this was left over from when it was fuel injected. Also wondering if this would affect the car in any way.

Pictures are dark but it looks like a heat exchanger.

Plate metal bolted around the exhaust manifold to gather the heat and warm it when the weather is cold, feeds warmer air
to the air filter. Usually operated by a small spring in the air filter housing.

It would have has some flexible pipe from that to the air filter housing.
