Nasty squeak from rear drivers side

Hi All,

MK4 2009 Mondeo Hatch.

I have a nasty random squeeking that seems to sometimes only settle if you pull on the handbrake. THEN as soon as you hit any kind of bump in the road, the noise returns.

It's a constant squeeking - I thought it was a dry bush at the back of the car, everything looks ok and we cannot replicate that noise with the car in stands.

Does anyone know what this could be please? We arew going mental with the noise?

Many thanks

John

Hi John. Does the noise go if you touch the brakes whilst car is moving, if so I'm wondering if the brake pad is slightly touching the disc causing brake squeel
No difference at all...

Noise is quite loud. Can be heard both inside and outside the car. I would almost say that it could be somwething like the shock obsorber? That said, im fasr from a mechanic!
I know it's difficult with noise but can you describe it more. Does the sound change the faster you go, does it only do it when you hit a bump, you mentioned it stops if you slightly applied the hand brake. Also try pushing down on the shock, can you replicate the same sound. Also is your drum or disc on the rear
Pretty sure all Mondeos are discs all round.
Noise is "faster" as you move over bumps faster. the noise follows the contours of the road if that makes sense ?

pushing down from outside ive not yet managed a result as everytime I come to a stop the noise is gone.

Discs all round on this car.
It's the bushes on the rear arms / arm.

I had exactly the same as your describing. Dissapears when handbrake engaged, comes back when you hit a bump... Cant make it squeak by rocking the car when stationary.... everything you mention is identical. I took it for MOT and they failed it on rear bushes. Had them changed and I've never heard the squeak again.
I went MOT on Friday and passed with flying colours. I asked them to pay particular attention to anything at the back that may make a racket.

Do you have an image of what / where I should be looking plesae?

john
Perhaps your mot tester is less stringent than mine John, lol..

If you google Mondeo mk4 rear arm bushes, theres a ton of stuff about them. I'm no mechanic, but they're circular with a flat piece of metal on one side across the radius. It appears you can buy a tool for diy'ing the job if you're that way inclined..

Honestly though, the symptoms, and even the squeal you mentioned in your op are absolutely identical to mine, even down to the annoyingly long length of time it took me to find out where it was coming from, initially sounding like something in the rear door which was loose...
Funny enough I agree with borat. It was etc on my list lol. Looking at previous mot on mine it failed for the same. Every car model always has the a weakness and it appears the rear arm bushes are the mondeos. If it's not that the only thing it can be is a bush or bearing
Thanks guys, a worthwhile look....

by looking, can you tell if worn out?
When mine was done there's usually play in the rubber or its breaking away.

The squealing is telling you it's worn out !

I had the exact same symptoms as you described - rear pass side trailing arm bush for me.
