Hello Houston, think I might have a problem with my refurbed pump, but I'm still working at it. Car runs fine until it's used up the fuel in the filter then it stops. It's as if it's not sucking fresh diesel from the tank, although there isn't much in it, less than a quarter full. I know there's 2 sides to the pump, a low pressure and high pressure side.... just wondering if there's not enough umph in the low pressure side. Anyway, tomorrow will put a couple more gallons in the tank then see if there's any improvement.

Can you rig up a small bottle of diesel connected directly to the filter? See if it feeds OK

with the bottle higher than the engine and test the same with the bottle at floor level.

Fuel filter not connected backwards?

Thanks for your ideas. ????
Re filter, there's no mistaking 'cos the 3rd (return) spout is a smaller diameter.

Yeah its the main inlet/outlet that people have posted on swapping them around by mistake.

Had that issue on mine a couple years back, check if the feeding pump under the car has voltage. You could take off the hose to the engine on the filter and short the relay to check if fuel is flowing. If it isn't, check the connectors under the car. The pump is located on the right hand side of the car, just in front of the fuel tank

What, a lift pump? Has the TDCi got one? It would make sense, but never noticed one before ????
Does anyone know if there's a back to back connector that fits the end attachment on the fuel hoses, so you can connect a pipe to it?.
I considered cutting the spout from an old filter but the stub to connect a hose to isn't really long enough. The diameter of the spout is 10.4mm
Stop Press! I think they're call Bundy connectors...

I've just tried your suggestion and am getting NOTHING being sucked. Tell a lie, for a split second there was a bit sucked up, then it fell back into the can. Put my finger over the end of the pipe and no suction detected.
Engine runs happily till the filter is empty.

Have put original IMV onto new pump, tried a raised can of fuel directly into filter, now have a column of fuel but not enough to overcome the bend in the pipe, but at least have got a constant column. Put finger over open filter inlet but no suction detected. However, don't have any experience of this to compare with. Didn't try blipping the accelerator tho'.. To be continued.

Bit happier today. Engine running and not cutting out, so I got my trusty Fordiag hooked up and measured the frp of the new hp pump. Getting 1400 bar! compared to old pump which gave 850 bar, so looks like the refurbed pump I'd bought ages ago had a defective IMV.

That might be the issue then. When it comes to the lift pump, i know they are mounted on the TDDI engines, for the TDCI's im not so sure. If it works now then there either isn't one fitted to the common-rail engines or it was the IMV that was faulty all along. Makes sense though. Good luck with it. Hopefully it doesn't have that issue again!

It was Purple's suggestion to attach a feed pipe directly to the filter inlet wot helped, that and having a spare IMV. I never really knew what the IMV did, now I understand that it's on-off 'widths' are varied by the ECU/PCM depending on engine demand and it varies the flow of diesel to the filter and
ultimately the pump. Who knew! Anyway thank goodness it wasn't my new pump 'phew'!

Uh oh! might have spoke too soon. :-( spent the weekend on rust fighting, today, turned attention back to getting car on road. Still got issues with engine runs fine until filter empties then stops. Refill filter, engine runs but filter doesn't refill automatically. Attached a clear pipe to filter inlet spout and put other end into a can of diesel resting on top of engine. Start engine, initially some fuel gets pulled into filter from can, then stops
Sometimes a small amount of fuel gets lifted up the pipe but not high enough to overcome the bend and enter the filter. I've already changed the filter and IMV.
The high pressure side is fine and outputs 1400bar, it just doesn't seem to have enough suck to pull fresh fuel into the filter. Any suggestions anyone?

So, anyone with any experience of what ACTUALLY happens when you attach a feed pipe to the fuel filter input and into a bottle of diesel and then start the engine? Does the fuel get sucked into the filter.. am I looking at a defective pump altho' the high pressure part works fine... ????

OK, anyone ever screwed up like this? Had to remove the locking ring that held the chain sprocket for the hp pump in place while the pump was out. Now the sprocket has moved out of place and seems to not want to go back into place. :-( am thinking might have to remove timing cover to sort it out. Anyone know a good place to get a replacement cover for a reasonable price for, ta.
Actually, not getting any comments... anyone out there?

Thanks, much appreciated! Job has gone a bit sour on me, as I was putting original pump back. So could take new pump to get tested. I accidentally (manually) turned the engine with locking ring in place which put the sprocket out of alignment and meant couldn't slide pump back in position. Removed locking ring to realign... woops big mistake as chain tension too much to overcome. Got to remove timing cover. This is a summer job really!

Like i said previously, check if the pump is there. on the right hand side of the car, towards the rear. a bit infront of the fuel tank.
