My wifes Mk3 diesel has a very noisy compressor clutch, it cycles off and on even when the air con is not on.

It stops making a noise as the revs rise.

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Thanks

Hi & wellcome to MEG !
Are you sure it's the compressor clutch and not the crankshaft pulley??
Many people around here changed it (also the belt and tensioner). I had to change it too.
If the climate is OFF then the AC comnpressor doesn't kick in, that's for sure.

I am pretty sure it is the clutch mechanism because I can see something appear further out from the pulley during the noise period, goes off and on every 20 seconds or so.

It was in the dark and raining at the time when I looked so will have another look this weekend.

A/C definately switched off.

Had a look in daylight at the weekend.

Demist off.

When the compressor comes on it is making a loud tapping noise which goes away if the engine is revved up a little, about 1200rpm.

It was not coming on so often as it was cold outside.

I reckon I will just leave it until it gets worse or fixes itself.
