Hi,

A nitrous-specific forum might be a better place to ask but...

I think the general consensus is that a standard car like a Mondeo will be fine on small jets e.g. 30bhp using a simple dry nitrous system.

For more power it would be very sensible to use "colder" spark plugs and to use a controller to bring the nitrous in gradually. Wizards of NOS call this a progressive controller I think. This way much more power can safely be added.

The standard transmission and clutch will be fine for quite big gains but it's always good to upgrade brakes and suspension before adding big power.

Another thing to consider if wanting big power is to retard the ignition timing. The best thing is to have a Unichip or similar engine management system with 2 maps - one for NOS, one for without.

Of course if only adding 30 or 40 horses you'll get away without upgrading anything at all, just might shorten the life of things a bit.

as above, zetecs (or most types of engine) dont like NOS without it being set up properly (tuned, mapped whatever)

be sure to get a wet kit and dont buy a cheap brand of kit.

if you only run say a 25 shot it should be ok without tuning/mapping.

if you havent used NOS before beware it is a bit crap, it only works properly in the warm weather unless you have a leccy bottle heater and keep it up to pressure. that is just one of the many drawbacks of NOS which the fast n furious film doesnt explain

p.s. bluefin works very badly on zetecs, 3-4bhp gain tops (and its no good for other mods as it is mapped for a standard engine, so it pretty useless)
sorry for the hijack.

is there any other perfomance mod that offers the same or "more bang for your buck" than NOS?

remapping, does it use the obd port or something else?
For the money you'd spend on NOS.

be better having the following.
1) one of my induction kits
2) 2.0 Thtollebody and cams
3) One of my focus manifolds modified
4) Re-map by us.

All that would come to half the price of a Nos kit (under £400) and give you the gains all the time. And be a few £ on petrol.
already got:

induction kit
2litre engine
4-2-1 manifold

Was thinking of the person who posted (Windy) not you

would a ST throttle body fit on a 2.0si ? i had a think about other ones but has it been done
ST throttle body doesnt fit.

for the cost of a NOS kit you may aswell fit a set of extreme cams, a 4-branch manifold with decat and have it remapped. with bigger injectors it would see 160-165bhp and you'd always have the power there with no refill costs.

a rover 820 or RS1800i inlet on top of all that should take it to 170-175bhp so long as the tuning is done well, and the exhaust system is decent/healthy.

Nope, NOS gives the biggest bang for buck by miles but it comes with other costs - refills, possible extra engine wear, bottles leaking or exploding, poor cold weather performance etc. so it's better to do "proper" mods if possible IMO.

Remapping can be done via the OBD port and that's how Shaun's tuner does it.

Actually on my mk1 he tapped into the wires leading to my port as the mk1 plug is all wrong :}

(clever guy I think!)

yeah my fezz has no OBD and i was curious as to how i could get it remapped
Well he did mine but I dunno if the Fez could be got at the same way or not! He can, if needed, take the chip out and reprogram it but don't expect him to do that on a group tuning day - he couldn't fit mine in on the day. The problem with this, as I see it, is it can't be "live mapped" which would be the best way to work on it.

Also, without using a dyno I don't think you could get good baseline A/F data because the engine won't be under load - speculation on my part is that this would be useful but obviously not essential as they can do mapping without driving it or putting it on a RR.

Without a tuner being able to work with the existing ECU you'll need an add-on chip like a Dastek Unichip or Megasquirt but that costs a bit to get set up because it's fiddling around with loads of sensor wires etc. and isn't easy to do DIY (almost nobody does I would guess).
well i'll be fitting bike carbs so will just get megajolt (squirt costs was too much), get some base maps and map it myself :)
Should be a beast.

Any reason for carbs instead of injectors - cheaper?
beware many attempts at self-mapping are ok to get it running but nowhere near as good as a professional job.

a guy on turbosport did a 2.0 zetec on TB's and fitted megasquirt, he did alot of reading up and research (and was no thicko) then when he got it dynoed it made something sh1te like 140-145bhp :}

later he had it remapped properly and it was around 190bhp.
