Parts Prices

Has anyone else noticed Ford's part pricing going through the roof?

What's rubbed me up the wrong way was paying £38 +vat for the metal coolant pipe on my Mk1... and getting quoted a three figure amount to replace a rusty power steering pipe.

Or should I blame Arnold Clark? :p

It's turned your pic the wrong way too lol
Yes they're very expensive for daft things. i.e. when i asked for a price on a new scuttle panel (plastic trim that covers the wiper mechanism) they quoted me something like £78!
Imagine if you made an order for every part you can possibly buy for the car... I wonder what it would come to. Must be about the price of a new car, surely :}

I was pretty disappointed at Ford prices when I ordered parts for my head gasket repair and they were (much) more than others had hinted at in recent years.

I was quoted £180 for a coilpack and ht leads the other week, and that was the trade price!
Ouch!

New Micra is what, £7000-£9000 depending on spec? If you build one from parts bought from parts dept, you'd be looking closer £15000-£2000. That's an example we were given at work, how true it is, I dont know.
I was charged £56 for the rubber's at the top of the door (window seals)from Arnold Clark
i wanted to know the cost of the engine under tray for my st24 at ford and the parts guy had to double check after it came out at £626 SHOCK   I LAUGHED IN HIS FACE...deano
Told by Parts guy at Main dealer that Ford Parts prices to their dealers have gone up by approx 35% in the last year!
Yeah, the guy at the parts desk said something similar to me.

I could understand it if the parts were still in production, but I'd imagine at least for older Mk1 bits, the run finished years ago and it's a stockpile of parts they're working though.

I wonder how the prices of gold & oil have increased compared to Ford parts? Maybe they're an investment idea?

Melodrama, me?
Ford Parts almost doubled their prices across the board about 12 - 18 months ago.

I'd be surprised if that was all it cost. When building cars, you know how many of everything you'll need. Everything will be ordered and used "just in time" to complete the run.

Spares, on the other hand... many will be lurking around for years. Some will never get sold. Every item they stock, whether selling well or not, requires space, costs money in overheads, takes up time whilst doing a stock-check, etc, etc.

A scuttle panel? How many of those are going to fail in the lifetime of the typical car? The answer is very close to zero. Hence not many will get sold, but they'll all be taking up space... :)

They look cack when they're scratched though! As mine is!
Aye, I'm sure they do. But Ford will still struggle to sell many per year, so each one they have sitting in stock will continue to cost them money to hold on to, and much of the stock will eventually be flogged-off without ever turning a profit. That's why certain parts end up being so expensive.

Things like wings, head gaskets, coilpacks, etc are often replaced, so tend to not be stupidly priced. Plus there is a large enough market for aftermarket companies to sell "compatible" products for a bit less than the genuine parts. But rarely-used bits and bobs.. they just sit there for months or years, for the most part. :)
