Is there a detailed topic search for this forum?

The top one doesn't seem to be very good.

After the head plane,

I had to switch to premium 98 petrol, which improved things a bit.

Questions:

1) Does this engine control unit retune/remap the engine to cut down pinking?

After the rebuild I got low load pinking when climbing a slight slope at 50 kph,

but only after heat soak/ higher speed running.

The weather has been a bit damp lately, and the pinking has cut down dramatically.

It used to be quite continuous, high-pitched rattle/rustling/"tinging" sound.

It has now changed to more intermittent "normal" pink sound-lower frequency.

It has done about 70 kms since the rebuild.

Does this sound about right for an ongoing remapping operation?

2) Is there an ideal timing pickup position?

I have it in the middle of the range, and the engine sounds a bit more crisp and responsive

than right at the bottom of the range. It had no effect on the low-load pinking at the time.

3) Is there any external "trimming" provision? Some ECU/CIU units allow this, but they are all different.

They normally work on current loop detectors/sensors, by adding or removing resistors.

Other ECUs are "smarter" and can retrim using oxygen and pinking sensors.

Taken too much material off the head which has increased the compression ratio

beyond the systems adjustment?

Ideally you need to open the combustion chambers a little to lower the compression

ratio. Or a thicker head gasket.

A remap maybe able to add enough fuel to combat the pinking, depends on what the

compression ratio is like.

What kinda of rebuild has this engine had?

Bottom end is very expensive to rebuild.

Has to be clamped to a torque plate before undoing the bearing carrier, then because the block twists it then needs line honing.

It seems to be OK now. The self-remapping has gotten rid of the more continuous light pinking.

We are due for a long open road run next week, so I will keep the radio off, so I can hear what is going on.

If you go into the forum relevant to what you wish to search for, then put your key word(s) into the search box, then change the little dropdown, to 'This Forum', before clicking 'search', you'll only search that forum. :L
