Thanks, the site could not find it but I phoned the Ford dealer I bought it from and they said it was the 180A alternator, which is good because it is much much cheaper than the 220A.

Do you have access to forscan?
If not, I'm only in Derby I'm happy to plug it in and take a look for you
I've driven the car about 1500 miles since the battery light came on in Scotland. As I said before, the batter is 12.4V and when the engine is running with all the accessories on the alternator is providing 13V.

You were right on the money when you asked if I had Forscan. I got an adaptor off of Amazon and Forscan returned several fault codes related to the generator, for example, open circuit and ground fault. I am booked into a garage on Wednesday but would love to fix it myself if anybody has further ideas. Just one more thing to add: in the frosty weather I noticed that the front screen heater was not working. I pulled the two 40A fuses, which were not blown, but the battery light remained on.

I've attached a text document with the Forscan report.

Heated screen won't work if there's a alternator fault that's a standard thing.

Like I say I'm mobile if you want me to come over and take a further indepth look and if it needs an alternator I'm happy to replace it for you

Hi, That's very kind of you. I took it to the garage this morning and the read the codes and they got the same faults I got with Forscan, namely open circuit and ground fault. They said that it was not something they could do and that I should take it to a specialist autoelectrician. Do you think this is something you could fix? A small chaffing wire would be difficult to find. What do you think.

It's definitely something I could take a look at.

Amazing! I've had this fault since December and now its gone. The weird thing is that it did not clear all at once. I first noticed that if the car was warm and I pulled off into a motorway service station, sometimes I could drive for a few miles before the big red warning message was displayed. This morning the car was cold and it started without the warning and seems to be holding so far. When the problem first appeared it had been sitting in the rain in Scotland unused for 10 days over christmas. I'm wondering whether the wiring loom got damp and now it's dried out from being driven 1500 miles.
