Rattle on idle

Ohhh no!!!

The engine is rattling on idle intermittently, goes away when presing on the gas. Car drives normal, starts normal as well.

2 things springs to mind, the dreaded DMF and pulley/aux tensioner.

This is a 56 plate 2.0 115 with 75k on clock with fsh???

Can anyone shed any light??

a rattle on just idle is USUALLY the DMF*, on a light load (upto 1500rpm) its USUALLY an injector

*is it a rattle or a bit like a bag of spanners being chucked about?
Definetley a rattle sound which goes when pressing the gas peddle, its coming from teh driver side engine area.
Aux belt tensioner. Mines the same. It's bloody annoying
Hope it is just this, I thouigh this was solved on the 56 plate??? Mine is also a 6 speed hatch, are there any tests i can do to discount the DMF??
The easiest test is to leave the car idling with the rattle and press the clutch pedal to see if the rattling noise changes at all. Also if it's from the drivers side of the engine it's more likely to be the belt tensioner as the DMF rattle would come from the other side
Rattle still then when pressing the clutch, drove home today and car drives fine with no problems, just this rattling sound when idle.

What damage can it do to the car folks?
its due a change as only had teh car for 4 days but is has full dealer service history.
Mine did this last week, the noise got louder when i put a load on the engine on idle i.e put the heated screens on.

My problem turned out to be the drive belt pulley

I took a video of the noise and put it up here Clicky

Mine's been rattling away since last June when i got the car. Hasnt got any worse over the last 12k miles since then.

I'd be interested to see what the fix is .... as summers coming and having the aircon on makes it sound like a tractor at idle :}
The pulley on the tensioner just chipped and shredded my belt. I only just got back on the battery. All fixed now, but was a lot more expensive than I would have liked as the car was near my work (i.e. not at home with the tools I need). T'was quite noisy before hand.

Having said that, I am not saying yours is going to break as this is just one case. Also there is a fair chance that the pulley had been on the car since day 1 (now on 106k miles) as I cannot find it in the service history.
OK i will get it seen to, the other thing was that i was in traffic going down a hill, let the care roll in neutral and teh rattle dissappers.
Yeah - the PCM keeps the revs ever so slightly higher when the car is moving so rattle may stopjust like when you put a tiny bit of pressure on the gas pedal,

- I got my PCM updated and the injectors recalibrated and the noise from the pulley went went away (for a short while) as the engine was running smoother. Had to get it done in the end though at 100k - the belt is only rated for this anyway (ford say 50k, haynes say 100k..)

Ford also say 100k, this is clear from the service schedules you can pring out from ETIS.
Mine went at 117000 miles lol

I stand corrected! The Haynes manual was my source!
