it is not intended to support the weight of the headunit.
Putting in the adapter then putting in the headunits cage in and bending the tabs on the cage to engage behind the dash which pulls the cage and adapter hard against the dash is sufficient and the cage and dash take the load rather than the adapter.
go to town with bending the tabs on the cage, get them really wedged up against the back of the dash, you can probably turn that upside down and have the headunit at the bottom and the compartment at the top if the back bracket is crap and need to use the factory one or would just prefer them orientated that way.

I had a high end Sony Single din at the bottom and a blank at the top before i put in my touchscreen headunit, i never got a back bracket so mounting at the bottom to use the one sony provided was how i installed it.
