"spill timing" is a method used to time a fuel pump, basically making sure that it injects at the right part of the compression stroke. You connect everything up apart from one fuel pump discharge line to which you connect a drain line with a high "n" point above the pump, you then bar the engine over, ie turn it over by hand. When diesel issues from the drain tube injection has started, you then adjust the fuel pump drive alignmnet so that injection starts at the correct point in the compression cycle. Connect up the remaining fuel line press the button and hey presto. Nowadays the same thing is achived by inserting timing pins and using timing marks that align everything for you, much easier but not as much fun..........
