Strange Cigarette Lighter problem

Hi

Can anyone shine some light on my strange problem

My cigaratte lighter socket work fine until I go about 40MPH, then it dies. When Ive slowed down it works ok again. Thought it might be a bad contact but cant understand why its linked to approx speed

Voltage regulation not working, voltage gets too high for whatever you've plugged in? If so, it should also die at lower speeds in lower gears.

Pop up the cluster diagnostics (see wiki) and take a look at the battery voltage when the problem occurs. If it's over 14-15V, something is wrong.
