when i start up from cold, and just before the engine catches there is this graunching (like a crunch crossed with a groan, and a bit of whining) sound coming from the front left side of the dash/engine bay.

sorry i can't be more specific, but its been happening over the last couple of days, and wondering what it might be.

any help or suggestions would be great, thanks.

Yep mine does exactly the same.

usualy from a cold start and last about 1 second.

Its perfectly normal.

All it is, is the cam chain tensioners presurising as the oil circulates. There is a breif moment while the tensioners are not presurises so the cam chain rattles.
Its quite normal for them to do this. its a little wear on the tensioners but nothing to worry about.

Mines been doing it for about 8 months so far.

cheers for that. every time i hear something not quite right i'm fearing that it will cost me £££££££££'s

and now the airbag warning light flashes on and off. i blame the cold weather and the 1/40th inch of snow we had!
