Suspension Differences Between Models?

9228 Views 25 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  TreborB
I'm interested in knowing the differences in suspension between the various models.

eg. Edge, Zetec, Titanium, Sport etc.

Dampers, spring rates, arbs etc. I'm assuming that geometry is the same across all.

Is the estate stiffer at the rear than the hatchback?

Cheers

Spring load details can be found on etis, we have covered this before. If you look on etis it would maybe show up on a search on here?
  • With Standard Suspension
  • Front Spring Load Class-O
  • Rear Spring Load Class-P
for my own car.

I've no idea what that means though
What do you want to achieve with the info? Are you looking to change the handling?

As per the title, I'm interested in what the suspension differences actually are between the various specs.

e.g Is 'Sport' suspension stiffer/lower springs or is it also different dampers, arb's and geometry? Do the models in-between have different combinations of these?

The ETIS only mentions a spring code, although not a spring stiffness (e.g X Kg/mm)

In my view, my own car does have a very good combination of ride and handling for the various road types I encounter (good on rough back roads, twisting A-roads/mountain passes and flat-out down the autobahn on long European drives), but there's always potential for dialling-it-in a little. Maybe to shift the emphasis slightly towards cornering without losing out on the smooth, compliant ride.

An obvious starting point would be to use standard Ford parts.

I don't agree with the idea that overly-hard, low suspension is automatically "better".
To the best of my knowledge, there is the Titanium X Sport/ Energy Efficient model (not sure of the name) that have lowered sports suspension (30mm drop).

I own the Titanium X Sport and it is firm by normal family car standards but is no where near as firm as say, a Civic Type R.

I am looking to upgrade the suspension to make it more compliant around corners (less body roll).
Cheers.

I'm not keen on lowering the car as I want to retain the ground clearance.

If nobody knows what the other differences are, I'll have to try phoning a Ford dealer, but they'll probably know even less....

I'm pretty sure its just the springs that are different on the Titanium X Sport/ Energy Efficient models - the shock absorbers and anti-roll bar are the same unfortunately. Ford offer a Eibach (springs) and Bilstein B8 shock absorber upgrade path but anti-roll bars are in short supply with the rear one being slightly less than ideal for the Titanium X Sport.

It would be Interesting if the dampers and ARBs on all Mondeos are all the same, but some springs are stiffer -Some of the setups would presumably less than ideal.

The old trick of 'piggy-backing'/doubling-up the arb might be an option.
If anybody's interested, I measured my rear arb and it was ~20.4mm at 3 points along the straight part.
what is this etis site mentioned on here and how do i go about using it

click this and on the top tab where it says "vehicle", put your reg no in and look at the spec etc.

There is a drop down list that shows full features under "minor features"
Does a 59 plate 2.0 TDCI 140 EDGE Estate have different springs to an equivalent Zetec or Titanium/X?

ETIS says mine has:

  • Front Spring Load Class-O
  • Rear Spring Load Class-P

Cheers
Not entirely conclusive though...

I was mostly wondering if the "Zetec" had stiffer rear springs than the "Edge"
Edge is just trim, ford doesn't have endless config so I'd say there is only 2 maybe 3 spring variations to cover, low spec, sport and estate.
I suspect that may be the case, but don't know for sure.
Have no idea what it means but my standard 2.0tdi Zetec Hatchback on 16" wheels says

Front P

Rear F

so that's another few letters of the alphabet covered lol.
My 08 140tdci ghia

  • Front Spring Load Class-P
  • Rear Spring Load Class-F
