my brothers Mk3 has just been written off after having a scrape ( those exact words ) down the side. according to the insurance company it will cost £2075 to repair which is a joke as its only 2 door skins and a bit of filler to sort. its a 51 plate mk3 with 2 owners from new. my dad then my brother and has FSH and 68k on the clock. they have offered him £900 for it. i have told them not to accept that offer or ask the insurance company to find a car in that spec and mileage for that price. since writing the first part i have found out hes been given £900 plus the car back. its a CAT-D due to the price of labour and parts. just needs a wingmirror and an MOT as the insurance wont insure it again even though it passed its MOT in jan. no mechanical damage. this was fully comp insurance as well. its a JOKE with insurance. i know we have to have it to be legal but if so much as a scuff on the bumper nowadays and the cars written off. what makes it worse is the car was perfect before it was scraped down the side outside where he lives parked on the road. he didnt even know who did it. and when you say to the insurance company not to pursue the claim they say they cant do that so you have the car written off anyway. that just stinks of crooked insurance fat cats sitting back on our money.

same here mine was wrote off with a scrape down one side, full history ect.... only needed a wing mirror, mine got wrote off on a 02 plate, i could of bought iit back but din't bother, now its back on the road with some other fooker driving it. truth is i'm not to bothered has i got a good price for mine what with working for the same company who gave me the loan car and who sort all the value ect.. but for someone who doesn't know it can be very hard
That`s mental. I got hit from behind in Dec, only damage was to the rear bumper. Mk2 GhiaX, W Reg 115k on the clock. They repaired it....total costs was somewhere in the region of £650 by Ford
Twiggy.
Part of the problem is that YOU and ME know how to sort this out quite easily and for not much money.
If we wanted to be super cheap, we could even buy new doors and wings etc from ebay, and even in the right colour!

The insurance company, with the system of using approved repairers (meant to make repairs cheaper and better, but doing the opposite), will be thinking of two whole new doors from Ford, a top notch respray, replacing any dented panels and spraying them, plus doing all this at £55-65 per hour in labour!

I had a Cavalier mk3 repaired through the insurers once. The company I used was owned by a friend of the family. He told me how much he would quote to the insurers, using their price structure, and that was enough for him to repair my car properly and leave us £600 to split between us.

So, I got my car fully repaired, and ended up £300 better off.
This is why cars get written off. It is the car repair industry ripping off the insurers, who could not care less, as it is you and me paying the bill in the end anyway!

yeah well at the moment am sourceing parts off ebay and breakers in the right colour and see how cheap we can get it. what makes me boil is they said its got to be MOT`ed again and theres no mechanical damage.

Gaz. debs car is an agreed value aint it? that should go part way to helping if it gets clonked.

After reading this thread, i have to reply.

I am a consultant to many Bodyshops and feel i should defend the repairer community on this one.

The Bodyshops are lucky if they can get between £26.00 to £35.00 per hour, not the rates you were thinking of. The investment in a bodyshop is upward of £300,000 and now the staff have to be trained to ATA standard. Most reputable bodyshops are either manufacturer approved or Pas 125 BSI.

Vehicles today are not being written off because of the labour, its the cost of Parts and Paint. These costs are not in the control of the bodyshop, and the labour element is carefully controlled by the insurer through the mandated estimating systems.

The other factor here is that salvage values are really high. This is the main problem, not in your case because you are keeping the car and would not compromise on safety. However any one can buy salvage and put it back on the road and sell it, remember an Mot is just a vehicle roadworthy test. not a structual test as in most cases the cosmetic finish covers this up.

Because of salvage values and the cost of parts and paint a very high proportion of write off's are going back on the road and sometimes the new owners are un aware of the damage or if the vehicle was repaired by qualified people.

Sorry to bore you but i felt it was relevant.

Thanks for your imput into this situation. and i can say i do understand the costs etc in whats happened with bodyshops.

I do spraying on a private basis and have sprayed many a car for myself and family. self taught and then nightschool educated i can spray a good standard and have the tools and equipment at hand to do so. having a coachpainter in the family holds great value for advise and technique. ask anyone on here what i have done via spraying with my mk2 and they will tell you it wasnt dull and lifeless paintwork.

Paint as far as i can remember for the mk3 that hes got will come to about £80 thats for about 2lts of paint. laquers 1 pack and will blow 2 coats through plus 3 of base and colour. this will be the whole side of the car as we are using new old stock parts. wing mirror is second hand so with 2 doors a bit of filler and leadwork on the rear quater and pulling the dent out the front total cost comes for parts about £200.
Insurance company wanted £400 just for the paint on the quote. now there is no need for that is there? overestimated quotes and prices i feel.

I take on board what you say and will get an accurate costing of the product for the side of a MK3, we have to use water based paint and have to comply with all of the local EPA legislation to make sure we don't pollute the local population.

I will cost it up and get back to you, also the repairer needs to make a profit but should not rob the job.
