Hi

Is it possible to use a THREE button remote on a Mk2 that currently has a TWO button remote?

Current remote is Radio Frequency and not Infra Red.

Also if it is possible can I then somehow use the third button to do something useful?

Reg is 'R'
1.8 TD estate Endura DE engine

When I unlock rear door (estate) I DO NOT hear anything like a relay clicking if that helps.

I have no boot button as such, just insert key and turn and boot magically opens with a little pull.

I could fit bits if I know what to nick from the scrapyard...

I have NO eyes on door handles
also NO little bead on remote key close to shaft.

I am 99% certain the car is Radio Frequency and not Infra Red.

The convincer for me was when I put the remote to my head and found out I could open the car and set the alarm from nearly 100yds away! lol!

I'd be 90% certain its RF. My '97 MK2 has RF, so as a later car, this should too. AFAIK, no "eyes" on front door handles = RF.

If you can borrow a 3 button key from another car, you can progamme it, try it out and then reprogramme to the original car. Total piece of thingy to do - see www.mirez.co.uk for the full sp.

If it works, why not go the full hog and get yourself a jag flip key, which should also work with a little modification.

what else would he need if he fitted a boot solenoid to make it work? as bat21 has one in the for sale section.

would a new simple connection be needed to the rf module or is a loom needed?

or wouldn't it work at all?

My '97 silvertop 1.8 came with a 2 button RF key. I didn't need to change or add anything to get the standard 3 button Ford or 4 Button Jag keys to work with it. The Mirez site is a little inaccurate here as according to the descriptions, mine is an IR key, but it is DEFINATELY RF.

I'm pretty sure that all MK2's with RF locking (no "eyes" on front door handles) have the boot motor fitted as standard. From what I know, it is only the REALLY eaarly MK2's that have IR. If in doubt do what I did - borrow a key from another car and try it (used my dad's Focus key). If you can here a motor rewinding after pressing the boot lock button, you're definately ok.
