Wont start, when it does cuts out

if its overheated then it may have damaged the internals of the engine, causing it to be tight hence the reason it will not idle.

sounds like you have blown the headgasket when you over heated it which is why it will only start with a tow and also why it wont idle

best thing to do is to get it compresion tested as this will tell wether or not the headgasket has gone
