How to remove the sump

I need to change the sump on my 2.0. The Haynes manual suggests I need to remove the timing chain cover. Admittedly, I haven't got underneath for a proper look yet, but I can't see why I would need to remove the cover before attacking the sump.

It also says I need to support the engine. I can see that the sump bolts to the gearbox as well, so I guess they is to prevent it flexing when taken off?

Can anyone shed any light on this please?

I will try and take some pictures during the change and post a how to in here when done.

Thanks

You need to support the engine / transmission because you need to pull the gearbox off the engine

slightly to be able to remove the sump.

To be able to do that you need to slacken but not totally undo or remove the mountings.

Same for the timing chain cover. You cannot remove / refit with it in place.

Only if you dont intend on putting one back on. Hammer and a crowbar will see it come off.

It wont be anygood afterwards though and no hope of fitting another one.

One of those things they call progress i guess.

No longer just a case of drain the oil undo 10 or 12 bolts and drop the sump off. Pop a new

cork gasket on and retighten.

I think its the chain cover that requires a silicone sealant to seal and not a gasket.

Too little and you get leaks, Too much and it could block the oilpump, Oilways or the filter.
