Poor MPG and Squeaky Clutch Pedal

Just purchases a 2008 new shape 18.TDCI Mondeo - had it for 1 week and trip computer shows 35 mpg which seems low, had a full service and done a few long runs, what are you guys getting on yours? Also clutch pedal squeaks when depressed. Ford advise it is due to springs on pedal being under tension, lubricating it has made no difference, any ideas? Thanks

Can't help with the clutch I'm sorry but my 2.0tdci 7000 mls averages around 44mpg mostly 5 miles busy dual carriageway runs and 50 mile round trips at the weekend visiting the family.
Fuel consumption dropped to below 40mpg during the blocked roads, heating, lights and front and rear screen heaters running of the recent cold spell.
Hope this helps

I've resolved my clutch pedal by spraying a lot of WD40 on the base of the pedal and then depressing it like 100 times. No squeak at all now.
Just be careful with drops of WD40, not to ruin your carpet. Put some old newspapers bellow the pedal and leave them there over a night.

Hi Thanks for that, just used half a can of WD40 - will see if any better in morning, it amazes me that with all the new technology in the new Ford, they cant engineer a non squeaking spring!
Mine didn't get any better next morning, but it progressively got better in about one week, then noise disapeared completely. It was 3 months ago and hasn't come back ever since.
About MPG, after leaving your car stationary over a night, check the tyre pressure. It has to be as manufacturer recomends. Note that if you check the pressure on petrol station, after driving the car, you have to put 0.5 bar more (7.26psi).
Manufacturer's recomendation is for completely cold tyres. I've got one digital pressure reader and I check my tyres twice a week, in the morning before driving, and adjust the pressure with leg pump. I don't trust those one petrol stations. My MPG got a lot better after taking care of pressure this way.

Also be careful of WD40 as it damages rubber and if it gets on to the back master cylinder seal it might destroy them then, use silicon spray instead, thats ok on rubber.

The squeaking was still there this morning, car was in for new reversing sensors and I asked Ford to re look at the problem. They said could fit a new spring or it might need a new master cylinder all of which would cost me and probably would not resolve problem. Went back to car really fed up but when I depressed clutch noise had gone. Marvelous. Will check tyre pressure carefully as you suggested. Thanks

Bump for squeaky clutch pedal. Anyone got any pics of the area that needs lubricating? It only squeaks at the top 2-3 inches of travel.

Have tried some silicon spray lubricant in the general clutch pedal area but the noise is no better.

Thanks in advance.

Fixed it today it was the switch as mentioned. Silicone grease all over it worked a treat. Thanks.

Got a picture LOL?

I got the same speil from Ford too, lubricated but not fixed, ÂŁÂŁÂŁ to continue diagnosis.

Glad to see some have rectifed it themselves here.

"Sticking it to the Man!" as Jack Black would say.

Get in the footwell and push the clutch down and look up. You will see on the actual pedal near the top where it pivots there is a bit that sticks out with a flat pad on it. When the pedal gets near the top of the travel the pad pushes in a plunger switch. I found that my plunger was the cause of the noise. If you can't find it I'll get pics but from that description you should be able to find it

I used some silicone grease (out of a tube so it's more like a gel than the spray) which has stopped the noise entirely. Lovely

Resurrecting this thread, let's see if anyone is watching.
I get some squeak as well and it looks like it's coming from the metal plate to which the spring is attached. It looks solid enough, no play I can detect except maybe for its own elasticity but when pushed or pulled (again, it doesn't move detectably) it squeaks as you change the force on it.

I can't tell where this plate is going/how it's fixed, if I can tighten anything or if there's anything to be worried about.
As it looks really solid I think the metal plate is attached to some other metal thing. But the noise sounds more like plastic/rubber so there might some gasket or the noise might come from some joint with some plastic part.

It is a LHD, anyone knows what's there?
