Hi guys,

After leaving it as late as possible to change my tyres with the christmas break almost over and im sure the cold weather is about to kick in soon i need to finally get some new front tyres.

I have a 2007 Mondeo estate 1.8 cdti zetec

I have upgraded the wheels to the 17 inch Titanium alloys

but the last MOT stated the front tyres were close to the limit

The wheel size is 235/45/17r car load index 93 car speed rating V ( as found out via national tyres )

keep seeing all this talk about summer and winter tyres but im not really interested in that, is there such thing as a all year round tyre ? last year i rode on two wheels all year round so i can handle the roads in bad conditions on four.

Got a limit of around ÂŁ150 for both front tyres, cheaper the better but as i do around 15k miles a year i want a tyre that will last.

WHAT TYRES DO YOU HAVE / RATE ?????

ÂŁ150 for both front tyres?

You'll struggle to get anything decent for that kind of money! I'd be suprised if you could get budgets for that amount!

I also run 235/45 17's. The MK4 Mondeo needs reinforced tyres, this means a 97 load index!

If you want anything decent you need to be looking at ÂŁ120-ÂŁ140 PER TYRE! That will get you a Dunlop SportMaxx RT or a Contisportconact 3. Both of which I recommend highly!

Tyres are the only bit of contact your car has with the road. Why cheap out on this crucial part?

I've not used the Rainsport3 but am a big fan of the Rainsport2s; excellent wet grip and although there are better tyres in the dry the Uniroyals are good enough. Excellent value for money as well.

There are all season tyres, but, in this size, i can't see anything south of ÂŁ100. (HANKOOK OPTIMO 4S H730, GOODYEAR EAGLE LS2, KLEBER QUADRAXER, VREDESTEIN QUATRAC 3, between about ÂŁ105 and ÂŁ115, but other dealers will have different prices).

Note that at the edges the distinction between Winter Tyres and All Season tyres are a bit arbitrary and YMMV, but all of the above are listed as 'All Seasons'.

Note also, if you buy 'budget' tyres, even in the best case, you are likely to be buying tyres that have at least one fairly serious weak point and if you are buying well-regarded and well reviewed tyres you are likely to be buying good 'all rounders', but at a higher price. This may be acceptable to you, depending on whether the particular weak point of the tyre is not one of your priority items.

The only thing at your price level that doesn't come with lots of caveats is a Syron Race 1 plus. Even that is only ok on snow and not that great on wear (and, I'm relying on on-line customer comments, which may be untrue, and I've never otherwise heard of them).

(Nexen N8000 aren't that bad, apart from wear and snow (for which they are that bad), so the more recent N'fera might be ok. or, not. Haven't seen reviews, as yet.)

Kumho KU31s are a tad more expensive, not particularly good at anything (hence could be described as 'all rounders') and poor on snow. I'm pretty sure that these are survivable, but they'll not win any prizes.

Barum Bravuris 2s are excellent, within limits. They are very sensitive to road surface (noisy) and you don't want them on the back of the car, where the tendency to noise and surface sensitivity is quite extreme. But they are decent tyres, apart from that (more or less of comparable to the old Sport Contact 3, apart from the noise issue, and, back in the day the SC3 was a very good tyre, overtaken by progress now, though). The race 1 plus's should be grippier, though.

There is now a Brav 3, and if that is an improvement over the Brav 2, could be a good tyre (but, I haven't seen any reviews at all, yet). I'd have to say that i have high hopes for this tyre, but it depends whether they have worked on the real weak points of the Brav 2 (noise, cold performance) or whether they have gone for something else (fuel economy and wear, for example - well, they are somewhat weak points too, but they are not what would stop me buying the tyres).

KU 39? better than KU 31, but not dramatically so. Not as good as Race 1 Plus, and not much over your price limit.

VREDESTEIN ULTRAC SESSANTA, HANKOOK VENTUS V12 EVO K110, HANKOOK VENTUS PRIME2 K115, VREDESTEIN ULTRAC CENTO, BRIDGESTONE POTENZA ADRENALIN RE002, GOODYEAR EFFICIENT GRIP - these are decent tyres, but we've drifted off towards ÂŁ100 per tyre. You can spend more, of course, and get still better tyres, but you have ruled this out.

And you also need to note that there is a compromise at any price level between soft and grippy tyres and hardwearing/fuel economy/less grippy tyres. You can buy tyres that are absolutely good, but which do not align with your priorities, and they end up not being good for you.

Good hunting - if you find one that fulfills these criteria you will have found the holy grail of tyres. Every time I read recommendation I get a different story, I have yet to see one make stand out from the crowd, and so it's again a case of "suck it and see"

Anyone tried Dunlops?

All season tyres are a waste of time, bad on snow and pretty bad in the summer time, too compromised in either season. I would rather use summer tyres all year round than use so called all season tyres.

Look at the Uniroyal Rainsport 3 as a seriously well priced and very safe tyre. Other well priced tyres are Toyo proxes and Kumho, good mid priced tyres that offer good results. :L

I'm going to retract that - doing a bit of searching around, I came across this review. Now, the very poor wet perf (not noted in customer reviews at all) would be enough to make me avoid them. I'm not sure whether the customer reviews or the ADAC report are more reliable, but either giving an otherwise unknown tyre a serious black mark like that would be enough to make me look elsewhere.

(There is something a bit suspicious about a serious flaw like that showing up in one review and not in others; you'd have thought that if they were really bad in the wet, customers would notice. There are a number of possibilities, but whatever is behind it, I don't think that it is worth taking the chance.)

(The ADAC test is of 225/45 R17 tyres; that is a reasonably similar size to the ones that you want, so that bit isn't a big problem. However, not all of the tyres that they tested will be available in your size, or this country. The 'Apollo Aspire 4G' (isn't that a mobile phone?) which did quite well for a definite budget brand, finishing half way up the table in particular, I don't see in your size in this country, but I haven't looked very hard.)

Look at www.mytyres.co.uk. price includes fitting and balance with a choice of fitting shops locally. Takes about 2 working days before you can have them fitted. Hope this helps with the budget.
Neil.
