try tracing its wiring.

 

Aux power to the towbar maybe

 

Thanks for the replies, I did wonder if it had been added by a previous owner, and it doesn't have a towbar so I'm really not sure. I may have to follow previous advice and start digging into where the wiring actually goes.

Many owners are adding that type of switch there for things like modified footwell lights or under car lighting.
I'm sure you haven't got a set of neon tubes under your motor but the thought of you happily driving along with colour changing lights under the car is pretty funny.

 

Could be, or have been all kinds of things. Luckily it wasn't for an ejection seat!
