ABS/ESP warning indicators.....

Hello folks,

I had a look round but couldn't find anything regarding the ABS/ESP warning indicators hence the new topic.

I got in the mondy yesterday and the (ABS) & ESP indicators were iluminated on the dash. Never seen them on before. They stayed illuminated for the duration of the 10 minute journey. I turned the engine off for a matter of about 10 minutes while I offloaded the kids, then on restart the warning indicators had gone.

Has anyone else had this?? I am due at the dealers this Friday for the headlight malfunction and for them to look into the oil service warnings and I will get them to check the brakes too, but i was just wondering if anyone else had experienced this and if it looks like another ECU glitch.

Thanks in advance, Elvis.

Hi Elvis.
I have experianced this as well. Although I also noticed when the ESP and ABS light was iluminated the brakes went rock solid (felt like no servo assist) and the engine lacked power.
Car only done 560 miles and a week old, so booked it in to have it looked at an the dealership advised me that there where not any error messages stored for the diag computer to read. Went to leave dealership and noticed a TPMS error on dash, called technician out and he plugged into computer again and got 168 error messages but none an hour earlier.

Car going back in tomorrow for two days to see if they can sort, will post on wednesday if they have managed to fix.

Cheers

Lee,

I didn't notice any difference to the way the car handled. Everything from a driving perspective was sound which leads me to think that it was just another ECU glitch.

Let me know how you get on at the dealers. Will be interesting to see what happens and if mine is indeed a similar problem to yours.

Cheers, Elvis.

Hi, Just a quick update on my problem.

Car has been in garage and they are not able to find any problems.

It has today gone in again as still having occasional ESP light coming on (happened on way into garage today so they have now seen the problem) also had Engine Management Light on all day on Monday and brakes still take between 10 seconds and 5 minutes to have servo assist.

Have found the following on the forum http://www.fordmondeo.org/forum/showtopic.php?tid/791626/post/1617977/hl/servo/fromsearch/1/#1617977 so have printed out ans given to garage, so hopefully they will agree and fix.

Will update as soon as car returns.

I'm having problems with abs, traction and brake warning lights. The car has been in Ford for 2 weeks and they think the fault is ABS program unit the parts on back order with no delivery date, I've not had the car for more than 24 hours its been in Ford ever since.
Had this back in October on mine. Garage reset fault and everything was fine until this week and fault back. ESP light in dash on all time and ABS and brake warning light flickering on and off. Booked in next Monday but fault seems now to have gone again. Will take it in anyway and see what they say. I still have oil warning light coming on every 3 to 4000 miles so want this sorted to.

Hi sorry to jump in on your thread. I also have a problem with the ESP light staying on. Problem started when I came down a spiral ramp in car park. Now ESP light stays on whilst driving. No change to car performance or handling. Only had the car for 3 weeks and still under warranty so will take it to the dealers. I will post back here with diagnosis.

Hello all,
I'm encountering similar problems with the ESP/ABS warning lights on my 2007 1.8 tdci titanium x. I only drove it 100 yards from the car supermarket where I bought it 10 days ago before taking it back to them. It's since been back to Ford where they said they had resolved the problem only for it to reoccur as they were delivering it to me this morning! To say I'm fed up is an understatement. I've now been told that the cluster module will have to be replaced behind the dash and that this is a common problem. I'm in two minds as to whether to reject the car or not. I'd be really interested to hear how many others have had this happen to their car and how the situation was resolved.

Hi,

my 2007 1.8 tdci Tit X is in with Ford at the moment, its taken them 3 days to decide thats is a faulty ABS module...hopefully !!!!

My problems were that while driving the abs and esp lights came on then the hand brake light then the engine management light, ACC became unavaiable and the hill hold assist stopped workimg and the parking sensors.

I have only had the car 2 weeks and payed £13,500 for it...NOT very happy

Regards

Dave

Hi Dave,

Sounds like exactly the same problem. I'll ask if they've explored the possibility of it being the ABS module when I next speak to them, unless that's the same thing as the cluster module they were referring to?? Whatever it is you don't expect it to occur on a car that is less than 18 months old with 10k on the clock do you?

regards,

Dave

Received a call from the dealer this morning, they have decided that the ECU is the problem and are going to replace it. They haven't got one in stock so it will probably be a week before I get the Mondeo back. I thought buying a new car was supposed to be a pleasurable experience? Oh well, things can only get better can't they??!!

Faults usually follow a J-curve: components that are inherently faulty break all at once early on in a vehicle's life, then there's a quiet period until things get old and start wearing out.

I hope they're right. When ECUs were first introduced, 95% of returned "faulty" ECUs were fine...

My 57 plate Tit-X went in today for investigation of ABS/Traction/Handbrake lights coming on after approx 5 mins driving. The dealer called to say that it required a replacement 'ABS module' which is currently on back order, and they recommended not driving the car! I explained that I couldn't have the car off the road indefinitely, and asked for further info. The engineer said that they had to 'officially' recommend not driving but that lots of older cars didn't have ABS in the first place 'wink wink'!!! I signed a disclaimer and plan on using the car until the part comes in! Is having no ABS a major safety concern?

Hi, My ABS/Traction stopped working and the lights have been on for the last 6 weeks or so. The dealer ordered the new part(sensor and some part of the wiring loom) when I first took it in, but it's taken since the begining of feb to get hold of the wiring loom.
Finally got a call today to say the parts arrived, so got it booked in Friday for the (hopeful) fix.
To be honest though, I don't really miss either, as luckily enough I haven't had to rely on the ABS since it's stopped working, it's just a case of going back to the old way of driving before ABS was on all cars and having a bit more feel with whats going on when you brake.
I'll still be glad to have it back working and to get rid of those lights on the dash though...

Hi, got mine back today too, all working with no lights as well, I took the bluefin off before taking it in to the dealers and had forgotten how big a difference it makes, Dave, get it remapped, I couldn't wait to get mine back home and get the bluefin back on it, without it, it's half the car it should be.

ESP ABS and brake warning lights still coming on but no apparant problems. Garage reset fault a fortnight ago but still happening.

Took car back today and faulty ABS control box diagnosed.

New part being fitted tomorrow. Wait for it cost of part excluding VAT £950

Thank Goid for 3 year warranty :flipoff: :flipoff:

Hi all
3 weeks ago, I put a deposit on a 16 month old Mondeo, but the ABS module failed when they fitted the parking sensors that I asked for.
They're still waiting for the part to arrive from Germany.
Is this a common problem ?
Once the module fails, does it keep happening ?
Just had mine replaced fault was that abs and esp lights kept coming on. Everything worked fone though. Part was on back order bt garage got it in less than 2 weeks. VCost of part was £950 plus VAT so get it done while still in warranty. It took garage nearly all day to do as well as it was linked to immobilisor and car would not start after fitting :eek13:

ESP warning light on my 57 1.8tdci came on 6 weeks ago, the day I bought it. Garage diagnosed it needed new sensor which arrived from Germany on back order 2 weeks later. When garage came to fit it they said, 'oh, its cured itself' so didn't replace! This Sunday car failed completely after ESP, ABS and handbrake warning lights came on - immobiliser activated. Towed to garage. Today garage has ordered new main ECU. I'll never know if these events are connected but its a big coincidence.....!

Hello All

I'm a regular reader of the forum but have never posted much. I've just had the ABS and ESP warning lights come on on my 1.8TDCI (125) Zetec Estate while coming home from Easter hols towing the caravan. Braking felt fine, however there is a severe lack of power, which is just what you need whilst towing.

Booked into the dealers for Friday - will see what they have to say. I have my own idea. I've not yet had the trailer module enabled on the computer after having the tow bar fitted, I believe on some cars that when a trailer is connected the ESP is adjusted for towing, does anybody know if this is true of the Mondeo.

I have the same problem with my 08 1.8 TDCI Edge.
The ABS and Traction Control lights came on on the dash and the engine then suffered a loss in power. This happened on the 30 March and I took it in to Ford immediately. They diagnosed a corroded wiring loom on the offside front wheel sensor and told me it was a common problem and Ford had issued a TSB for it and they then changed both front wiring looms.
The fault then still persisted and then diagnosed it as a faulty speed sensor in the nearside front wheel. This was then changed and the car returned to me on Thursday 2 April.
All was fine for 3 days until the following Monday
6 April and 80 miles later when the lights again illuuminated on the dash and the lack of power returned.
The car was returned again to Ford who had no idea and they consulted with Ford directly and 4 days later Ford agreed that the problem was a faulty ABS module.
This item was not in stock and has had to be put on back order from the suppliers with no delivery date.
They offered to rebuild the car and let me have it back but as the car would not pass an MOT test with the faults on it it would not be classed as roadworthy thus in the case of any incident there would invariably be problems with insurance validity, police interest etc.So i refused to have the car back at which point the dealership said it was the right thing as the legal position for me could be problematic if anything happened.

It is now 16 days since the problem occurred with no date as to when I am likely to get it back.
Would not be so bad if I was not a taxi driver and am thus also out of work until car repaired.
