Mondeo mk3 02 plate 95,000 miles. Have developed a clicking noise from front drivers wheel . The noise is a click rather than a clunk, thud etc. only happens above 30 mph and while going straight or turning left . if i turn right the noise disappears completely and when i drop below 30mph it also disappears . Have checked tyre seems fine. have had other problems with droplinks cv but this noise is different sounds like there is a big nail in tyre. any ideas, appreciate any help Thanks

will keep popping back to this thread as i would love to know what this noise is too

( cant offer any advise on its cause mind as never found out on my mota

)

but had a mishap when changing the lower arm ball joint & it ripped the inner CV joint appart ( as well as bending the suspensiont top mount ) so on went a used driveshaft - cheaper than re-building the old one if it was fixable - & the lower arm balljoint got replaced as well as the suspension strut got pushed back the other way to straighten it
Image
& after that i had a clicking as described here ( not so much when straight line butdefo on left turns & nothing on rights - drivers side too )

checked all tyres & were free from stones/nails etc, also checked to make sure no brake lines or cv joints were hitting the new lower arm fixing bolts etc, & nothing.

basically it stumped the mech too as when up in the air, nothing

told to carry on & return when it got worse as it would hopefully be easier to spot then, & it carried on for a good month or 2 of driving it like a proper arse round the twisties ( basically trying my best to kill it by driving like a pleb ) & tbh it worked a treat, at some point i did kill it as the noise has beggered off & i aint heard it in months now
Image
( when i mentioned the fact it had gone to the mech he assumed that it may have been one of the CV joints being a smidge out of whack compared to how it was on the previous car so was just re-bedding in but he still said he did not know what the hell it was for sure )

i think more likely replace the front suspension again with all new ford bits after saving up some ( completely not just struts & springs this time ) as i have given this cheapy setup some grief since it was fitted - also as i mentioned in my 1st post, my clicking noise only started after the strut got bent in ways it should not have been while still fastened securely to the car at the top
Image
- it just got bent back in the opposite direction to straighten it up before refitting the replacement driveshaft & rebuilding the car

)

either way the noise went away eventually & so far it aint returned or the wheel aint dropped off so cant complain

i got pillowball mounts on my coilovers theyre great and the steering is lighter. thats one thing i love about the mondeo how light the steering is. theres a considerable difference on a ford focus as theyre heavier on the steering but you would think it would be the other way around.

Check the ARB droplinks mate. The joints can dry out and when that happens they no longer pivot smoothly but 'snap' from one position to another making a clicking/creaking sort of sound.

If that's what it is, you can regrease the joint but there might have already been wear to the ball/socket so for what it costs I'd replace it. If one side is gone, do both anyway as the other won't be far behind it.

Sounds like ive got the same issue on a 2001 V6 Ghia x.

Seems to be coming from the drivers side front wheel.

If i turn the wheel even slightly to the left (while braking or not on the power) i get a sound that sounds like a zip tie (tie wrap) being closed, This stops if i accelerate (even with the wheel turned left) or turn the wheels back to straight or right....

I cant hear it with the window closed, also cant feel anything through the steering but i have heard a grinding/grating noise under similar circustances (turning left off the power) when i have the windows shut and radio/ heating off.

Any ideas welcomed, going to try and get a look at it this weekend if the weather stays dry .....

Loosen the lower arm bolts and lever the arm up whilst doing the bold back up. Its a long shot but have cured a Cv joint type noise before with this, hope this helps

Thought I'd share my fix for a clicking noise from front wheels on a 2011 Ford Mondeo. Turned out to be dry and tacky CV boots/rubber - especially noisy clicking noise when turning. I took the wheel off the car and turned the discs by hand with the car on full lock and created lots of tacky clicking noises from the CV joint. Silicone spray worked for me to just prevent the noise from happening. No more noises since applying silicone to the rubber. Make sure to apply brake cleaner to all of your brake pads and discs before putting the wheel back on. Better still cover the brakes before applying silicone spray.
