Had to defrost car with keyless start of engine is there a way to exit car and lock it while engine runs,

if not how far can a thief go without the electronic remote.

You can travel forever without the key, or at least until you run out of petrol, if you switch car off without the key you can restart it again within 5 seconds, a message comes up on the dash to tell you this too!

Yes, you can drive as long as there is fuel in it. Done it myself with last car.
I drove to airport, wife slid over from pass side to drivers seat as I got out. As I walked away to enter airport she drove off to home.
I did not realise I had key fob in my pocket until I was on plane.
Wife realised she had prob but had sense to get home before turning eng off.
Spare key fob was in the house but I was not her favourite for quite a few days.
IIRC it is something to do with legislation/safety that stops manufacturers from introducing a system that makes the eng stop if the key is not present after a certain distance

If you have keyless entry as well as keyless start then you can lock the car while it is running on your drive and keep the key in your pocket all the time - don't even need take your gloves off. I would have thought you could also use the remote central locking buttons if you don't have keyless entry.

I presume having the engine stop if it no longer detects the key is a safety issue - if the key fails or detection is blocked/jammed for any reason while you are driving you don't really want the car cutting out on you while you're doing 70 in lane 3 of the motorway - not safe for us, not safe for other drivers either.

Fair enough, but that could be easily solved by turning the engine off upon your next stop, e.g. at a traffic light.

Still a safety issue - cars shouldn't just disable wherever they are on the road - say in the middle of a traffic jam at a junction or on the motorway.

You really don't see how its dangerous being stopped on a motorway when cars behind you are doing 70mph+ not to mention you would be stuck in the car as well. Stopping on an A road at lights wouldnt be an issue but there are times when it could be deadly for the car to just stop.

A theft device should be installed, giving a warning of the car is to slow and finally

stop within a certain distance, allowing it to be safely parked up might be the solution

for a future security upgrade, so car thieves will know they have only a short distance

to travel without keyless in range.
