DPF location

Hey guys,

I was doing a bit of research today and found that the DPF on the older 1.6 TDCi 109ps engine was located below the turbo charger (behind the radiator). This surprised me as I always believed the DPF system on all cars were fitted to the middle of the exhaust system.

I suppose it is a sensible place to locate a DPF system as the engine bay can reach very high temperatures.

Now, my question is - Is the new MK3 Focus TDCi 115 engines DPF located in the same place. I have noticed there is a large heat shield placed over the exhaust part of the turbo charger and the shield also covers the lower part of the engine and I cannot see if the DPF is located further down.

Any help will be appreciative. Many thanks,

Matthew.

Hi, I think it would need to as near to the engine as possible so that the regeneration using exhaust gases can take place. Further back and there is the likelihood of it not being completed...

Hi,

I agree with you Chris. I didn't know if it was the DPF or the catalyst as many have argued over this on different forums. I found out that on the 1.6 and 2.0 TDCi (back in 2008) Ford merged both the catalyst and DPF into one component.

If you do look on Ford DPF systems for sale you notice that the DPF is fitted vertically with the top of the pipe bent over (I suppose fitted to the exhaust manifold) and the bottom curved under (to go below the engine towards the rear).

If I am wrong, please correct me as I am interested to find out what part is fitted to the front of the DV6C engine (behind the heat shield).

Thanks guys,

However, I have just looked under the car and noticed something that looks like a CAT/DPF under the car, mid-exhaust. Would that be a muffler of some form?
