one of my tyres need replacing so ive rung around and they all say that i should have 165/65/13 i have on my 2002 ka style 175/65/13 ive been told that i must change all 4 as its altering my speedo is this true. and is it dangerouse to keep 175 tyres on the car

165/175 is tyre width which does not make any diffrence to your speedo tyre profile ie 45 ,50 , 55 ,60, or 65 changing this can change your speedo reading , when putting bigger alloys on your car people put a lower profile tyre on to keep the overal wheel and tyre size the same.

Tyre sizes are wierd things. 165/60/13's will have a lower profile that 175/60/13's. There's a mix of metric and imperial that defies logic. the first number is the width of the tyre in mm. The second number is the height of the tyre expressed as a percentage of the width. Confused? The third number is the size of the wheel, in inches! Does anyone make a 13 1/2 in wheel? Or tyre for that matter. All very nuts, and just the way things have evolved. Doesn't make our lives any easier though. :)

Spot on. Although the profile remains the same, it's a percentage of a width.

Hoshi uses 195/60 tyres on a 15" wheel (this gives scope for 18s without any fuss or bother with steering lock, clearance or whatever mwahahahaha), but although they have the same profile as Kermy's 185/60s, they're slightly "taller" in the rubber.

The base or control tyre for the Ka is a 155/70/13. 165/65/13s are 99.54% of this size, so barely smaller. 175/65/13s are 101.92% so a little bigger. 165/60/14s, used on those 1.3s with alloys, represent 101.17%. It won't matter that it's on 175/65s from a speedo perspective.

Kermy's 185/60s were 100.91% of the control tyre.

Mixed up my words there a bit, but you got what I meant! So x/60/y tyres will have different height tyres, depending upon the value of x.

It seems like the origional poster has been the victim of workshop scaremongering, because most of us don't have a clue what the numbers mean. A bit like Ford charging £300 to fit a hardtop kit for the StreetKA. It sounds like a big job, and unless you're going to stand there watching while they do it, who's ever going to find out?

Many people reckon big / small / big is the best compromise, but on almost roads for almost all cars, it isn't.

It's possible that 175/65/13s are used by a bunch of cars. The Ka's 165/60/14 size is a little unusual so I'd suppose the 165/65s are too.

I'd have no problem myself running on 175/65s (and was considering it when Kermy's 185/60s wore out).

All Ka's in America fits 185/60 R14.

I personally changed my tires for 195/60 R14, awesome change !!!!, I had to put spacers for the front wheels (they were rubbing), back tires fitted perfectly.

In the Mexican Club is very common to fit 205/45 R17, depending off the Wheel offset.
