Those gearbox stop leak tubes of stuff you squirt into the gearbox can make the gearbox fluid smell different as well . Think it has brake fluid in some of the ingredients to make leaky seals swell up . If somebody has been naughty and squirted some of that in it could confuse the smell of the fluid as well . Noticed this before when I've used that stuff (its crap don't bother :) )As i said in my earlier post my box oil that was leaking didn't smell of gearbox oil as the gearbox was filled with ATF fluid . Found that some vw's that share the gearbox with the mondeo are filled with ATF fluid as well ,dextron 2 . Apparently it helps with gear shifting in cold weather . How true that is feck knows :)

That's really interesting. The illustration seems to show an o ring (with the bearing visible through it )rather than the normal input shaft seal. You can see how that would leak if the csc did not also act as a shaft seal.

Guidance on box rebuild says use sealant and oring on mtx75, mt75 has a proper seal. I've only seen old versions of this though...

Bit of an update, had the car at the garage today, for a boroscope inspection, cannot see any black engine oil in the bell housing, the gearbox level is a couple of mm under the fill hole so thats ok,and the brake fluid is just above the max level,so cant be a leaking slave,so the conclusions at the moment judging from all that,it has to be from the old leak, and still making its way out, fingers crossed.

Hope so, fingers crossed!

a bit of an update,i dont think its the old leak, because i had to top my engine oil up on sat,it was half on the dipstick, its now just under max, will keep an eye on it ,if it goes down again its got to be the rear seal, then will get back onto the garage and they can sort it.
