Engine turns over but won't start, mechanic used easy start and it started for a few seconds but then cut out again, he says may be the timing chain slipped a cog, is there an easy way of checking this? Also if it has slipped a cog would that mean the engine is damaged?

Not just had a clutch fitted have you? Noises from the clutch area?

Flywheel sensor clean?

Have they plugged it in and got readings from the sensors?

hi noting your first post ..you had a mechanic working on the motor . because he has had first hand in checking this vehicle i suggest that you ask him to take off the timing chain cover and check the timing .. its a very simple job for a mechanics and as he has diagnosed a chain jump then he may very well be correct .. but using easy starr on these engines is a bad mark against your mechanic .. it should never be used on the ford mondeo diesel as it can permanently damage the engine . it was invented about thirty years ago .. for helping to start the most basic diesel engine like cement mixers on building sites and is far to harsh for modern diesel engine valve and starting systems . crazy.. s

Easy start invite the maniac that did that to carry out repairs at his cost not yours this could be the biggest cause of chain jump this stuff is a big no no this stuff could cause dettonation at any point of the up compression stroke I have seen single cylinder diesel engines runing backward because of this stuff lots of smoke and rattles

I was told never use that stuff in a diesel engine. Instead of a controlled burn you get explosions.

Whether its true or not, I have been told it can take the top off the pistons,
( Quite a few old time mechanics told me the same thing).

Older diesels took a dislike to these explosions and the pistons broke up where the rings were.
