Odd Whining noise, mondeo mk3 tddi

Mondeo TDDI 02 plate.

I have an odd whine noise which is really loud at idle or revving, the pitch seems to change very slightly when revving (very slight though), it doesn't happen all the time, sometimes I can go on a long journey without it happening once, it seems to be more common on cold mornings, or if it's not been used much, and starts about 5 minutes into a journey, usually lasts about 10 minutes before going quiet again (almost like a fan turning on and then off again).

It sounds really loud in the car, but hard to hear when stood outside. I haven't checked under the bonnet yet, (Because of the stupid bonnet latch design on this car) I can't open the bonnet with the car running. I did try to check the other day by turning the car off opening the bonnet and starting the car again, but the noise decided to stop, it's almost like it does it on purpose. I have tried turning the heating off, but the sound doesn't change.

Not sure if it's related but I get a misfire at times, It feels like it's in limp mode, rev counter moves steady but no acceleration, After looking on forums, I thought it may be the egr, that needs a clean.

Any help would be fantastic

yea it s a tddi and has a lift pump under the rear of the vehcile .the pump sits beside the fuel tank and is roughley in a line if you take the distance between the rear of the passenger door and the fuel filler is in this area on the drivers side rear . the pump can make weird noises and stop and start up .a way to chek fit is when you hear the noise start up ..stop the motor .leave the engie runnig and get out walk back to the area or the fuel fille and have a listen underneath here ,,also it is a very bad idea to run a mondeo tddi low on fuel as yo can blow this pump by running it dry .s

That would make sense. Plus have left it run low on fuel quite a few times (trying to push it too much before refueling). So could be the issue, i'll have to see if I can hear it by the fuel filler like you suggested.

Hello griffty1982,

I know it's an old thread, but did you have change your fuel lift pump and resolve your issue?
I've same problem happening this morning (only the noise) and obviously,no second set of key in my pocket to open the bonnet and check where the noise come from...

sorry to bring this up!!

BUT ANYONE READING THIS

DONT WORRY ABOUT THIS NOISE!!

YOU SHOULD BE WORRYING WHEN YOU DONT HEAR IT!

I MEAN EVEN WHEN YOU PUT YOUR HEAD TO IT!

i bought mine with a bad lift pump it was silent unless hit and the engine would cut out
