Overcooling.....arrrgh!

I've read many posts on the Mondeo Mk3 TDCI overcooling problem. I have all the symptoms, hot then cold with heater on etc but I'm not looking for a simple answer as I don't think there is one. What I do need help with is checking whether the cylinder head temp sensor is working properly.

Can anyone tell me what I should expect to see if I stick a meter across the terminals a) when it's stone cold and b)at normal running temperature.

Ok, as I'm here I may as well ask about an additional symptom my car has. When I start from cold the car rattles like 1970s diesel Transit. It feels like it is almost in "limp" mode but there is no flashing glowplug light. I drive for a few miles until it warms up (still rattling all the way), at a convenient point I stop and turn the engine off and on again and hey presto it's fine, quiet and smooth.

My reasoning is that the temp sensor is giving engine management a wrong signal at start up that saying the engine is warm so the engine runs lean hence the psuedo "limp" symptoms. When I restart, the engine is warm so engine management is happy.

Does that sound plausible?

Thanks,

Zane.

the first problem of cold start issue is usually to do with the ecu and not the cht . and requiers a cold start remap or patch at a main stealers. I dont have acess at perset to cht wiring and im answering you because your post has not been answered .
the second issue is to do with the main thermostat most likely . not haveing much to go on re your post . heating and cooling I will just say that this problem is usually caused by one of these .. the wrong stat is fitted . . It needs a ford speck stat and more importantly the proper ford seal to seal the stat in its well .as spruious seals will allow coolant to seep by the stat . .. 2 . a new stat has been rongly fitted . . 3 somebody prior to present owner has removed the stat entirely . 4 ,, the oil cooler stat on the coolant pump needs replacing also .. s
